Gold Coast website

Katisha66 from OzHoops stumbled across gameongc.com.au - the new site for the Gold Coast's NBL franchise.

The shortlisted team names in their naming competition are:

Gold Coast Heat
Gold Coast Waves
Gold Coast Flyers
Gold Coast Marlins

Interesting...

All pretty boring and dull names IMO. Id go back to the ROLLERS, was a crap team but very well known name back in the day! Could market the 'comeback aspect' too.

I think the Gold Cost Nuggets could work, I'm not going to sign up and give them my email address and postcode just to vote for it though.

Agree fully kobe, Rollers would also be ideal considering the G.C. convention centre is right next door to the casino.
Gold Coast Waves ?! ,isnt that same as a Roller?
Dave Claxton said that he didnt want to use the old name because it would remind people of the failed original franchise.

I would resume with the Rollers name too. Big deal if it failed - easier to regain those past Roller ticket holders than take a new brand to new fans.

I wouldnt be surprised if Heat gets up...Miami and Gold Coast are similair type envorinments from what I know (have never been to Miami personally)...so some sort of link could be played on.

Unlike the mergers and bad blood here in Melbourne, which bought the Dragons into existence after a couple of failed Giants rebirths, the Gold Coast has a history as a previous competitor in the NBL.

I think the Rollers should be reborn.

New fans are not going to care what the team is called, and it MAY just get a few of the oldies back.

Don't know why you would mess with it at all.

Townsville have called their junior teams/ABA team the "Heat" for some time now. Cairns ABA team are the "Marlins" - even one an ABA National Championship under that title. Come on Goldies...stop ripping off every other QLD associations nicknames.

How about:

Gold Coast Jelly Fish
Sun City Metre Maids
C

IMO consistency makes for a good nickname - that is, Gold Coast need to go with a GC in the nickname (thanks, Wikipedia):

Gold Coast GameCubes
Gold Coast Garbage Collectors
Gold Coast Green Cards
(my favourite) Gold Coast Grilled Cheese - you better believe that there's a Grilled Cheese entry on Wikipedia

Or, why don't they go all uber-trendy and borrow from the OC: simply call their team the GC. No nickname - just the GC.

Sun City metre maids would be great Uncle Leo. I go to the games just to see the cheerleaders.

The NBL doesnt like NBA rip off names either.Im sure its been posted before, but over 10 years ago the NBL wanted more aussie related names for the teams.Hence why Townsville Suns changed to Crocs, the Bullets and Hawks could keep their names as they were founding teams of the NBL.

I thought that related to the NBA pushing their trademarks into international markets?

Bullets and Hawks were around prior to those actions from the NBA, but I don't think the Townsville side were?

From what I remember the NBA said that Townsville had to change as Phoenix had the Suns name registered or something like that...

You could be correct about that Isaac,i can just remember reading about it at the time and im sure the NBL prefered a connection between the teams name and the city they played out of.
