Lucas re-Signing-BIG Mistake!

I have been a silent observer of this forum over the past year and have enjoyed the insight of many of its contributors&.I am a lightning member and have enjoyed this season as much as last season. BUT I can no longer hold my tongue, I have seen other posts from previous weeks about how great a coach Chris Lucas is& well I am sorry but I think he is a joke and Mr Marino has made a huge mistake by re-signing him&(although I have a feeling that he has got the YES man that he wanted)

Lets be honest a blind monkey could have led our team this year and last year to the positions they have achieved.
Now before I get screamed down for expressing my views, let me explain some of my remarks.
Stats don't always reflect an accurate picture of the situation, he might have won 65% of the games he has coached&.but then again the previously mentioned "visually impaired" ape could have done the same with the talent on hand.

Ask any of the players (off the record of course) how well he communicates with them?
Well he doesn't, he gets angry with them and doesn't tell them what they have done wrong, he gets sulky and storms off when there is something that doesn't goes his way&(what a petulant child!!)

He has one training drill that is done over and over and over again! (This is WNBL, not U10's)
He has the best point guard in the land who I am sure will walk away after this season and not return until he moves on.

He is given a WNBA forward and doesn't come up with one post play to utilise her skills (absolutely disgraceful)&and then he doesn't start her&(man are we gonna be the laughing stock of the basketball world&) How arrogant is this man!

And why wasn't bowley playing on Friday night&..i wonder if she was even told why she wasn't playing&.or was it her turn to tick him off this week.

Dee has been treated badly this year too&..i remember one match where she didn't even get on the court&.and now she will be asked to take on a lions share of the point duties with Lindsay

Don't get me wrong, I am happy with the results on the court&..
It just makes me sick to my stomach that this guy can treat these women the way he does and everybody thinks the sun shines out of his Butt&.

The man should go to a couple of communication courses not only with the players but with every one he deals with connected with basketball
He is in a position where he should be approachable, informed and on the ball - go John Gilles - that is a class act

I remember Chris telling me once that he gave up reading this forum ages ago because of all the crap that gets posted. Now I see what he is on about. Chris is a quality guy and a terrific coach. Yes he gets a little agro at times, but that's just because he's so intense and has high expectations of those around him. And as for having one training drill, either you haven't been there or you haven't been paying much attention.

wow, cool...i thought it was the lack of success that brought about the "sack the coach" posts, but seems not to be the case.

I have no clue as to what goes on in lightning land..gotta love the passion here tho...hehehe and reading this, if Phil thinks winning is going alleviate the problem posts looks like hes got another thing coming lol.

This is funny - I love it when people say that "a blind monkey can coach that team"? Do you understand that one of the hardest coaching jobs you can have is when you have an extremely talented team? When you coach a shit team, or a mediocre team, if you do well, you're an outstanding coach who brought the best out of the team. But when you coach an extremely talented team, even when they do well, you're open to criticism such as this post.

I'm not saying Chris is a perfect coach; he has is short-comings just as every coach does. And yes, one of his biggest areas that needs improvement is his communication with players. But has a head coach in the WNBL, he gets paid to win games. Bottom line. Not stroke egos. Not run fun drills. Win games. And for 3 straight seasons he has done that. End of discussion.

Why wouldn't you re-sign the guy? Who do you suggest instead?

PS. Have you ever spoken to Jan Sterling's ex-Lightning players? Whilst many of them will say that Jan is a great coach and that they respect her a lot, they don't have many nice things to say about her beyond that. But once again, Jan was there to win. She is a proven winner (as recently shown at the World Champs). Whilst Chris is yet to win a Championship, he has continued the Lightning winning tradition, by filling some very BIG shoes in taking over from Jan, and has made the Finals in his first 3 seasons.

Good move in re-signing him, I say.

chris seems fine, the team, crowd all seem tickledy boo as present - I do agree on not working a play for rasmussen though.

we have underutilized her for sure

erin has to work her way back yet - she might be going nowhere after the knee recon

playa,
I sencerley hope that Erin doesnt read that comment you made. If you knew this girl, you would know that she trains and works the hardest out of all the girls in that lightening team. She'll be back and more determined than ever. You just wait and see mate.
It just makes me laugh when i read pethetic comments like the one you did.

No I am not one of the assistant coaches, but I know Chris well enough to know that you are way off the mark with some of your comments. Whatever, you are welcome to your opinion. The bottom line is that those that matter, value Chris highly enough to re-sign him.

Yes Anonymous (#116044) I find your comments mildly amusing too!

You said in your post This is funny - I love it when people say that "a blind monkey can coach that team"? Do you understand that one of the hardest coaching jobs you can have is when you have an extremely talented team?

What a crock!....You have never coached have you?
I have coached many different teams at many different skill levels for 20 years. Give me an extremely talented team any day!

You also said
But has a head coach in the WNBL, he gets paid to win games. Bottom line. Not stroke egos. Not run fun drills. Win games. And for 3 straight seasons he has done that.

Who said anything about stroking ego's, just treat each individual with respect, and talk to them as adults.

Not run fun drills, no but more than 1 would be a good idea. How bout u actually read the post before u put up ignorant crap like this!

Win games. And for 3 straight seasons he has done that. .You missed the whole point ..Go back to sleep!!

"Who do you suggest instead?..... How about Rachel Sporn or Rupert Sapwell?. I am sure we will be able to find someone in this state that could do the job!...and if not, recruit from interstate!

cat in the hat: i may be way off the mark with some of my comments, BUT many of the players and those involved with the team KNOW i am right with most of the comments i have made...
and sure those that matter have re-signed him...but remember what i said about a YES man!....
I guarantee you Angela will play for the lightning next year...and then things will start to slide...
I Love the lightning and dont want to see this happen, that is why i cant shut-up and not voice my views.
Private ownership can be a great thing....but as we see there can also be a downside! I know Vince means well and is awesome for putting up the money for the team, But i just see he has made one mistake by re-signing lucas, and it looks like another for next year by bringing Angela here!

well hellboy perhaps you should have bought the team because obviously none of the players or those involved in the team have mentioned anything to anyone but you that there is a problem. If there really was a problem why haven't they spoken to mike daws or vince himself??

Personally I don't attend many lightning games the ones I have been too and seen on TV they have done a pretty good job. When I asked someone who has much more contact with the team about the court time of Kristen it was mentioned that she still doesn't feel 100% on her ankle and doesn't want to do anything to damage it further and hinder her WNBA career - which is number 1 for her.

Benj you said...

Benj, how naïve are you? It just doesn't work that way.
A players first point of contact should be the coach, if he is unapproachable (which is the case here) it would be extremely hard for a player to approach the GM let alone the owner!

These girls have worked extremely hard to get to this level and I am sure it would put them in a difficult situation to go above the coach's head. So quite often they just have to Grin and bear it!

This is what bugs the life out of me is that these girls do grin and bear it&and those responsible are left looking like things are just rosy

You then went on to say...
"Personally I don't attend many lightning games the ones I have been too and seen on TV they have done a pretty good job. As happy as she may have been with limited court time due to her injury, the point is she is not starting AND has been benched for the entire 4th quarters in their last two games. WHY THE HELL WOULD U DO THAT?

Lucas would not be benching her because her ankle hurt, he would be benching her because he is ticked that it might be sore&.his answer to injuries is to blame the player&remember the article where Erin Phillips and Rasmussen were chewed out because of their injuries...Kristen's injury was referred to as an .."ALLEGED ANKLE INJURY"...and Erin got heaps of crap because she needed to rest her calf& Any coach who thinks, accusing his players of faking their injuries will make them try harder, should NOT be in the game!....END OF STORY!

a coach's first priority, should be the player and his or her's health, because without the player you haven't got a team.
to not believe a player is genuinely suffering from an injury and expecting them to play though an injury is asking for trouble.
any coach who expects this of a player in my opinion is not a good coach.
hopefully this is not what caused Erin's injury.
I have seen a player sit with their foot in an ice bucket for 15 mins and then be put on the court and expected to play, and this was a junior team.
the player themselves know how serious their injury is and maybe this is the case with Kristen.

Hellboy,
Erin didn't get crap for resting her calf. It was her hamstring and seeing as she didn't miss the next game it is obvious to everybody that the MRI showed that she didnt have an injury. everybody can see that Erin was putting it on becasue she couldn't go to her boyfriend party. You may not be related to Erin, maybe. But you obviously talk to her oft4en enough and believe her bullsh$t otherwise you wouldn't be writing that stuff. And if Erin is going around saying what you sound to be repeating then she can go play some place else as far as I care

business arising - I have had many occassions to intereview Chris Lucas as a media reporter, and have found him quite communicative and very forthcoming with any information I have asked him.

To others claiming to "know" there are problems with Chris and the girls, these allleged problems would reflect in the on court performance (36ers anyone??!!??) a team in crisis does not perform well.

To those whining about your favourite player not getting the court time you think they deserve, Coach Lucas has always been one to play the players who are going to give the team what they need at that point in the game.

I recall a game early in the season Dee came iin to sub with about 2 mins left in the 1st 1/2...there was no stoppage in that time, and by the time she would have normally come in in the 3rd, the game had changed so much she was not the right person for the game at that time. Result - DNP...end result..Lightning won.

Get off the whinge and get behind the girls as they go into the finals!
