I will always have a place in my heart for Don Shipway... That incident in Hobart is one of my most cherished memories... This moron has been heckling all game from behind the bench, Don gestures for him to come closer (like he want's to whisper something to him) and BANG! slaps him clean across the face... The best part is the fact that the guy ACTUALLY bent forward towards Shipway when he getsured (all on camera) - ahh Tassie...

In no particular order:

Brian Goorjian (Best coach going around at the moment)
Ken Cole (He had flair)
Brian Kerle (Amazing what he did with the Bullets in the early years)
Lindsay Gaze (The Granddaddy of coaching)
Cal Bruton (You have to have guts to take over WSR)
Al Westover (From the LGaze school of coaching he is a very talented man)

This is my top six. I didn't put in Joey Wright because even 'Booga' could have coached that lot and got the same result.

Brian Kerle
Boy Gorj (hate to say it)
Phil Smyth
Ken Cole
Cal Bruton
Lindsay Gaze

Id probably put them in that order. A top ten? I cant come up with enough quality coaches for a top ten as the NBL (IMO) is not old enough

Just out of curiosity - How does Brett Brown rate??? Incomplete???

I think (correct me if i am wrong) he won the title at his first tilt with a so-so team... But he did have D-Mac...

Not Barnes, I blame him for all those missed medal rounds 90-00.
Plus he screwed Maher as well...

JohnnySack,

Brett Brown's effort as a rookie coach with Nth Melb in 94 was fantastic, beating another rookie coach, Dunlap, in the grand final.

Not so sure about your assertion that he had a so-so team though. He had at his disposal a very accomplished, experienced line-up, including veterans Larry Sengstock, Mark Leader and Darryl Pearce, a couple of fair imports in D-Mac and Paul Maley, plus a young Pat Reidy and Paul Rees.

Dunno... Andrew - that was my take on that Giants squad (bear in mind they were on the verge of liquidation when the season began - backs to the wall type stuff)... Maley and especially D-Mac were a fine tandem - but after that the quality dropped off considerably... Those vets were pretty much clapped out in `94... and I never thought that Reidy was that great (but an extremely intelligent player who made something out of his VERY LIMITED physical gifts) and Rees played the season of his career (which he parlayed into a trip to the WC`s in Canada)... I still maintain that it was a (on paper a very weak team) - and rates as one of the best (if not the best) seasons/GF wins in NBL history...

i am also not sure you can place westover in this league a of yet. The team he has had the last two seasons have been over the cap and points system. lets see what happens in the future.

Smyth has gone downhill a bit.. after the title of 2002, he would've been up there with what he achieved with the Sixers in that short period of time

How about worst coaches of all time?

Dave Claxton has to be in there somewhere

Worst coach has to be David Atkins (Hobart). The yank publicly ripped into Steve Carfino following a season where Carfino carried the team to finals contention. Result -Carfino took his skills elsewhere.

For anyone who put down the following on their list:

Kerle
Barnes
Joyce

You are jokes and really should ask yourself 'what did the five fingers say to the face?' and slap yourself!!!

Those guys are all mini buses, much like Phil. I am surprised you didnt put in Mike Ellis or Mark Price

I am still laughing, Brian Kerle, please .............and Barry 'Bung eye' Barnes, did you ever see him coach Australia. Put down the crack pipe folks!!!
