Where would a 59/60 draft pick put him on a teams playing roster? What sort of income could he generate?

2nd round pick usually means a one yr semi-guarenteed contract wit a shot at a roster spot and if so, then an option for a 2nd season. Sometimes players are signed up straight away but this depends on whether the team is already sold on them come draft day

From what I know, only first round draft picks are guaranteed a contract.

Second round picks are normally just invited to join that team's summer league team and then attend the rookie camps and then precede onto the veterans camps.

In Brad Newley case; if he is selected at 59 for the Phoenix suns he will have to win a place on the team via the summer rookie league and then try out via the rookie camp in late August.

I think you'll find it's not guaranteed at all. If he gets taken in the 2nd round he'll be battling to make a roster.

If he makes it, obviously he'll stay & would earn in the neighbourhood of $500K for the year. If he gets drafted but doesn't make a final roster, he'll play in the NBL, Euroland or even go the Schenscher route & play in the D-League?

Payments for those options range from ~$30K (D-League) to possibly more than what he'd make in the NBA (Euroland).

If he doesn't get drafted, he could still wind up on a roster somewhere, but it'd be an uphill battle.

**Edit - whoops, beaten to the punch**

Yeah I don't mean their draft postition equals a certain contract, not in the 2nd rd. These are genuinely the types of contracts 2nd rounders sign after the draft. Alot of the time only part of the contract is guarenteed. The team will pay them while keeping them around but they can choose to terminate the contract and not pay out the rest for the year.

I think Newley needs one more year in the NBL. He's not at the total ownage stage in this league yet. I'm talking something MVP worthy like a full season of 27, 7 and 5.

If he improved big in one more NBL season, he might then be projected in the pick 35-45 range, which would mean he's more certain to get picked. Making a roster is the next step from there.
