NBL Draft, Any Chance??

Could the NBL run a NBL Draft Each. There would only be enough room for a first round draft and players minimum wages would need to be increased to allows these draftees to live in each city. But could it work??

If we used last years finish in the season.

2007/2008 NBL Draft
1st - Razorbacks 21%
2nd - 36ers 15%
3rd - Breakers 12%
4th - Hawks Select 10%
5th - Slingers Select 8%
6th - Dragons Select 7%
7th - Taipans Select 6%
8th - Crocodiles Select 5%
9th - Kings Select 4%
10th - Wildcats Select 3%
11th - Tigers Select 2%
12th - Bullets Select 1%

What players would have formed the draft class for this year.

Kersten
Jawai
Loughton
Campbell
Seebolm

Others??

I think this would help bring more meaning to each ABL league.

no, it wouldn't.

young rookies are able to sign for more money and choose where they want to go already. However, maybe those who don't have a greater chance of making the NBL could go into the draft and maybe those players don't count in the salary cap or something?

Why could an NBA draft system not be used in the NBL is what I'm asking

They would go to another league, maybe college

There aren't that many quality players, if all asians were allowed throughout the NBL then possibly.

I think it could work. How many kids actually sign with their home town team anymore? It would stop teams like Cairns and Bris from being able to get top rookies like Jawai and Bradshaw, which could only help the league.

The only problem could be that some might not won't go to Singapore? But that may not even be a problem soon.

Well, if it doesn't make young stars like Newley and Ingles go to College or other leagues instead then i'm all for it!

Add in asians aswell, maybe the rookies signed from drafts don't come under the cap and are payed the minimum/maximum 80,000 for the first 4 etc.

Add in the Marquee player rule from the A-League and the NBL could actually improve quite alot!

Ease up 123abc, its just a suggestion.

If they go to college and come back why could they not enter into a NBL draft??

Also not everyone that goes to the AIS has the opportunity or chooses to go to college. eg, Ingles, Hill, Holnes, Forman, Gibson

Just like the AIS is not for everyone. eg, Pendlebury

What if they could have been drafted straight into a NBL team??

I also agree with your Marquee player rule. I would like to see that put in.

80K over 4 years?? I think 4 years is a long time. What about 60K - 80K over two years. Then if they are still good enough they will earn more or less if they are good enough.

A draft system can only work in the premier division of a sport.

It can't work in the NBL as it is not the highest level of competition, not even close. The demand and aspiration both for players and to get in to the NBL is not high enough. It is all about supply and demand.

If it is the only way to get in to the NBL, watch players go elsewhere. If it is not the only way, players will bypass it and it will be useless.
