First of all, I am extrememly dissapointed seeing people directly point to the umpires. Yes they were shocking, but bad enough to crown a team champions on bad calls alone? I think not, so congratulations to the boys from Sacred Heart and goodluck in Geelong.
However, I would just like to voice my own opinion on the Unley v Sacred Heart Saga...
With all due respect to Sacred Heart who are an impressive side, I think Unley still had the best team this year. Yes they were beaten by Sacred Heart, but I happened to catch the game, and Unley were far from their best (to say the least). Their turnovers were atrocious and very careless, their defence was terrible (letting in too many easy baskets), their shooters didn't shoot well, they just had an all-out atrocious game and from where I was watching, it wasn't due to amazing defence or brilliant execution from SHC. Unley were simply off their game and for what reason I don't know. Pressure? Intimidation? All I know is that against all other sides this year they looked good enough to do some damage in Championship at the end of the year because EVERY player on that team always did their job. whether it be hitting threes, making passes, getting rebounds etc.
Point to the Mercedes game for example, a thirty-point trashing where Unley looked like a team that were all in sync with eachother. It honestly was BEAUTIFUL to watch Unley dismantle a heavy favourite with sheer talent. The champion Sacred Heart team beat this Mercedes team by I think 2 points. That doesn't add up, especially since Keegan Brooksby was still at the top of his game, dropping 30 in both contest.
Another major issue no one has mentioned is the fact Unley were playing without their best player Daly, (who played vs Mercedes and was instrumental. With him on the court, Mercedes could not press. He didn't even score over ten but ran absolutely everything to perfection and used the ball amazingly well.) Daly would've limited the turnovers to an absolute minimum. And in a game decided by one possession that would be at least a 15 point difference in itself. That's what they lacked in that game, a cool head, and a true point guard, one as good as Daly who also has the ability to guard Harvey.
My point is, without Unley's best player, the worst game of basketball I've ever seen them play, they were only beaten by one (Could've tied but I guess we will never know). A rematch with both sides at full strenght would be a one-sided affair in Unley's favour in my humble opinion.
If anyone chooses to respond to this or offer their opinion please dont do so as a pride member of either school bashing the other. Or see it from a bias perspective. Because if it's one thing I'm tired off it's seeing people bag eachother or sound arrogant in their post about their school.
