Thank God for Brett Maher

Serious credit to Brett Maher. The team in general sucks (Ballinger and Maher notable exeptions) and the captain still performs and keeps his head held high. Must be driving him crazy - 24 points, 9 assists, 6 rebounds and he kept Harvey to 4 points. What more does he have to do to get some support? Thank God he stayed this season or we'd be even more screwed than we are!

Some people should never be allowed to age. Keep going for many more years Brett, you are too valuable.

Seriously , if you can get one thing from the games at the moment it is the pleasure to watch this man play .

Flat out Inspiration .

He deserves a statue at the top of the dome like the angel on your christmas tree , ok , ok that was taking it a tad far but you get the drift .

It is such a shame that in the twilight of his career he has to put up with such a pathetic team that are absolutely no chance of competing for an NBL title. He deserves better than that.

It is almost as much of a shame as the fact that at the peak of his career he was anchored to the Boomer's bench and had to watch Heal hoist up brick after brick, play no defence and turn the ball over.

Coaching was bad

why did Philnot play Cooper/Ballinger more?
Cheppelle/Dench less

Last half of 2 nd qtr phil did not adjust team and played through the Blaze Comeback.

Dench is < 10min player and Cooper more like 20mins plus.

Agree Rat10, Maher is a true and rare supreme basketball player, and it seems the organization hasn't taken advantage of his abilities and surrounded him with the right players. The idea that his abilities have been wasted to a certain degree disgusts me. Even Jordan had Pippen and role players like Rodman and Kukoc to work with. Brett Maher is that player that should always be playoff bound, and even if we finish 5-8, opposition teams will always be very wary if having to stop his almost predictable domination of the game.

Can I just thankyou South Adelaide and Sturt for the wonderful programsthey created a long time ago which created a player like Brett Maher. No doubt Brett's hard work has got him to where he was today.

Last night I wondered what we'll do when Maher retires? The better Australian free agents we've picked up in recent years have been guys like Dench, Copeland, Mottram (and that was even with a good amount of money left over from Newley!), etc. Most of the best players will be under contract so who would we be able to get?

Take him out of that side last night and we'd have been in even bigger trouble.

Probably depends on whos coaching Isaac - If you have a popular coach that everyone wants to play for they will be lining up for a contract..... wont they?

We'll need one of the top-tier players to replace what he brings to the team. That limits options to a certain group. Take out those that will be under contract now or get contracts extended. Then take out those that want to play in a certain area (e.g., stay in Sydney or Brisbane). Then factor in the coach.

It's going to leave a pretty small group.

They might have the money to bring back a Damien Ryan, but he is a gun for hire - not a team player with leadership, etc.

Exactly, Maher has been the best player the Sixers have ever had. He has sacrificed his life to stay here when obviously he has had the skills to make it in Europe and get the big dollars. So for him to be in this team this last few seasons is a disgrace towards him. People are saying Let Smyth stay on to save face after all he has done for the Sixers. but to me that is just a kick in the Face to Maher. Why should Maher have to put up with this sort of rubbish after all he has done for the Sixers!

My guess why Chappell gets the extended minutes is to fast track him to his former glory. Smyth must be desperate for that to happen.

Brett played a fantastic game last night, but i reckon he would be pretty angry with himself after the game, because when little Joycey had the ball in his hands in the dying minutes, Brett backed off him and gave him the three.

He his a champion because he is always looking to improve, and never happy unless he wins.

I reckon Maher will retire at the end of this year after a couple of successive seasons of disappointment. Why should he keep playing??? Phil has to get organised in the off-season and get teams ready for ROUND 1 not ROUND 4-6!!! If you don't want them ready by Round 1, im sorry but in the words of a great toupee "You're Fired!"
