Is Jan Stirling about to be sacked as Opals coach?

Just heard KG & Cornsey talking to Boti Nagy about the rumour that Jan Stirling apparently will not be retained as the Opals coach. Anyone heard anything about this?

It will be Carrie Graf, with an understanding that she will split her year between the US and her WNBA duties, and back to Oz for Opals duties.

I don't follow the womens game that closely, but I would say that Jan has done an outstanding job.

Jan certainly has.....and there obviously politics at work when Jan can come home with the EQUAL BEST ever result at an Olympics, and be considered as one of the lowest applicants to be consiedered for re hiring, yet Goorjian turns in one of the WORST EVER performances, and is highly touted to be returned to the position.

Unfortunately for Jan, 1 or 2 of the higher profile stars in the Opals (both happen to share the same last initial) appear to not like actually being drilled, and yelled at, and basically treatged like a player, rather than the princesses they are accustomed to being tyreated like, and as a consequence, rated Jan poorly in their player reviews of the coach (something thats meant to be highly confidential, yet the Canberra Times managed to get their hands on)

Basketball has always had a broblem with politics. This is so sad as people and their egos get in the way of the sport. Jan is one of the nicest and most loyal people I have had the pleasure of meeting (not on a personal basis)and her coaching abilities and knowledge cannot be questioned. Jans people skills are also of a high standard as she seems not only to have player respect but also parents and supporters as well. I hope the powers to be see that Jan is the right person for the job and gives her another shot at the big one.

it must be so hard for in the know to be perfect, certainly there are people who do post freely who think they know and often do not and do make fools of themselves.

however, aren't you at times guilty of jumping to the conclusion that they don't or that they don't conform with your view so ergo they are wrong.

Kriss in this instance simply might have made a typo and typed basa isn't of ba. haven't we all as in your nowing and knowing, made a typo in our haste to post.

or is 'our' in the know so perfect that only he/she can make mistakes

have a good day - go jan you have my support

Maybe Carrie Graf will have that inside edge over the US in Bejing being a WNBA head coach, ever thought of that?

That is exactly right Crocodile Rock, which is why she is considered to be the front runner.

Currently coaching in the WNBA, she will have a bit more knowledge what it will take to get the Opals that one last step, to the Holy Grail of Olympic Gold.

Mind you, given the amount of retirements, and new international players Jan had to work with, I think that she would be very hard done by to lose the gig.

Jan will move onto bigger and better things in the corporate would no doubt.

Someone with her people management, communication, work ethic, profile, marketing and leadership skills would be sought after by boards of various sporting, volunteer and corporate organisations.

Don't hate a lot of people and yes I make mistakes, just replying that Kriss hates players who dictate who coaches where. So before she makes that statement make sure she has the correct facts.

That is all.

Yogee, you said "Unfortunately for Jan, 1 or 2 of the higher profile stars in the Opals (both happen to share the same last initial) ....."

Who are the two players? Spill the beans. Sorry - don't follow the womens' game that closely.

I would rather not name the players, as I have not seen the info first hand, and therefore could be open to some libel/slander claims without the backup.

I sorta gave a couple of hints as it is :)

Jan has done nothing wrong and everything right.

However i could not believe the blasphemy post on some other basketball forum that yogee advised all about earlier this year..

(yogee what is that site again?...)

it appears a lot of posts from eastern states people that were disgusting in their comments towards the opals

bitter and twisted if you ask me...

I must have been on some serious stuff the day I made the first post...the players DONT share the same initial, but DO share the same WNBL team, and both are "international players"

Reply #15564 | Report this post

ahem!

by 'international' do you mean WNBA cause Brondello was playing in Europe she could be considered an International player

in fact as all played at the Olympics all could be considered 'international' players.

besides whoever they might be I heard an interview that Peter Walsh from the ABC did with Jan and she said she felt for the girls as she as coach has to fill in reports after each event and has to give player evaulations. she accepted that the players are asked to report in the same manner what she said was she felt that the players had been betrayed by having confidential information put 'out' into the general public.

the same interview had information from Scott Derwin who said that no decision had been made and wouldn't be made for a month or two, and any speculation at the moment was just that speculation.

I for one dont doubt Jan's intent nor feeling for her team members at all. Since covering the WNBL for wnbl.com.au thsi year I have had more than one occasion to chat with Jan, and find her one of the most honest, respectful and nicest people to talk to.

I too would feel aggreived if my team members at work were meant to do confidential appraisals on me, and then leaked it to the rest of the workplace, and made it general knowledge, especially if they were being perhaps on the negative side. Jan's biggest problem is that the biggest star in womens basketball doesnt like her style (oops, did I give something away??) :)

a poster on the ozhoops forum has suggested that jae kingi didn't have nice words for jan - he lives in phoenix and jae has been playing for phoenix, so there may be a grain of truth

my memory was that jan was very supportive of jae when she had her first child - jan chose jae to go to the world championships in 2002 - is there something that i am missing?

Go to The Age home, sport, basketball.

QUOTE:
"Those close to the team were aware that there was conflict between Stirling and Australia's champion player, Lauren Jackson, in China, but two years on, in Athens, players and coach appeared to be in harmony.

Now, the reports are that Jackson, Penny Taylor, the team's other young international star, and some senior players would prefer that the driven Stirling be replaced, which could trigger a public relations nightmare."

Even mre ludicrous is this from same article:

QUOTE:
"Goorjian also missed the Boomers job after 2000 but took over after Phil Smyth coached the Boomers to a loss in the Oceania championship in 2001, costing them a spot at the 2002 world titles.

Although ninth was Australia's worst result since the 1972 Olympics, Goorjian was seen to have put foundations in place after starting from a lower base in a more competitive section - and there was no challenger regarded as highly as him."

puhlease!
