How can it be amateur if people are paid?

Professional: undertaken or engaged in as a means of livelihood or for gain

Amateur: a person who engages in a study, sport, or other activity for pleasure rather than for financial benefit or professional reasons

Moses, how much livelihood or financial gain would you get out of an ABA salary? It would still classify as amatuer as they are still engaging in the activity for please rather than financial gain.

You can get paid to cover 'out-of-pocket expenses' and it still be classified as not work.

Wikipedia is written by anyone and everyone, and while it's largerly correct due to self-governance, i wouldn't take it for gospel.

SEABL is classed as semi pro. The other leagues are not it depends on imports and such as they are there for financial gain. So if you have an import in your team then that team becomes semi pro under the NCAA rules. There is lot more to rule but in short version thats it.

Big Kahuna, all of the ABA leagues are semi-pro and are considered that by BA. The Salary rankings are probably SEABL first, then VERY closely followed by QABL and BigV, then Central then Waratah. The ABA leagues as a group are classifed by NCAA - who provide exempt status for AIS in both ABA and WNBL.

Your NCAA statements are a little off the mark, a little to the point of being really misleading. A player paid to play in a State league team in NSW (not Waratah) could affect the NCAA thing. The NCAA do not define semi-pro - its either professional or not. Charging a spectator fee at the door can classify a team as professional for NCAA.

I know that the eagles had to go amature contracts this last year, which means that players only got paid what their expenses are. They did this so blokes like Trent Filds and John Worhnam could go to college knowing that they have played by the rules. It;s funny because people think that the eagles are always so good because they pay their playtrs so much, but it is the exact opposite....they are always so good because they attract people who will play for way less than they deserve in order to get better players to play with so they can acheive team success.Sullivan, Arnbold, Oakley, all were getting paid wayt more at previous clubs!
Trust me, they are well under paid.... Oakley said no to quite a few better offers money wise to take a pay cut and play for a team full of good blokes and who had a chance of winning. Same reason Gerlach has signed.....could of got better money else where but took a pay cut to play with better players in a team that has a great chance of being sucessful.

Go eagles! NO CAP has no idea.

What about the cash that they get given from the bar money?

A bar that doesn't have a cash register, but rather a till that has no accountability?

No charging a fee for spectators means our league is not classed as a summer league. That is why players coming back over here for holidays can not play. It is because we charge to get in and watch. No thing to do with pro or not. If players do play and the NCAA finds out that player will be red card or baned from playing world wide. I think you'll find under the new ruling.

We charge a spectator fee for the juniors. Does that mean that our U10s can't aspire to play NCAA because the've already played in a "professional" league?

Funny thing is, spectators pay to watch NCAA games!

(#156397)Really good point.....if you had half of an idea!

With weekly stocktakes (normaly sunday's)and matching stock back to bar takings, yeah they are really rorting the system.
