managing a massive half-time lead

interesting challenge -in the game against the razors 36ers had a massive half-time surplus. As a coach and a team you know that all your shots will probably not drop at that rate in the second half and your opponents will certainly come out with a combination of frustration and determination. The Razors were partially successful in distracting some of the team from focussing on basketball and they did cut into the lead. There was some showtime play early in the 3rd 1/4 which is ridiculous considering 36ers were on the wrong end of a 17 point turnaround in less than 4 minutes against townsville 2 seasons ago. Also noticed some absurd reluctance to pass the ball which crept into the game. And probably the focus switched to ME scoring rather than defence first and offence second. (jason's lob to Darren being an exception). Obviously at this level you are not going to start dribbling left hand or switch to half court offence. SO how can coaches at this level best manage that points surplus in a way that keeps the guys doing the right thing and shows some dignity and ensures the victory rather than risking the W by going stupid prematurely.

I remember back in one of the championship years, and Smyth said he preferred to win by no more than 20.

His facts behind this were that if you win by more than 20, it cant tend to inflate the team too much, and they can go into the next game thinking they are cruising.
