Getty Images Representatives of the NBA's Los Angeles Lakers are travelling to Australia to take a closer look at a number of talented young NBL players in the lead-up to the NBA Draft in June.
LA Lakers Assistant General Manager Ronnie Lester was recently joined by the Lakers Asian scout Gary Boyson in Singapore on Sunday to watch the Slingers host the Cairns Taipans.
The Taipans line-up features indigenous Australian giant Nathan Jawai, who is being touted as a likely first round NBA Draft pick in 2008.
Jawai will have done his chances of being drafted no harm after posting 11 points, seven rebounds and four assists in the Taipans 99-87 road win over the Slingers.
Lester and Boyson are now set to arrive in Australia on Tuesday, where they are scheduled to watch the Sydney Kings host the South Dragons at the Sydney Entertainment Centre on Wednesday night.
Dragons second-year star Joe Ingles is another player who has regularly been on the radar for NBA scouts as a potential future draft pick.
A number of Australian players playing in the US college system are also receiving considerable NBA Draft buzz, including A.J. Ogilvy (Vanderbilt) and Aleks Maric (Nebraska).

I am pleased to see Aussies in the basketball spotlight again. It will be great to see more Aussies joining the league alongside Andrew Bogut. We certainly have the talent.

It went quite on the lack of Aussies for a while when Luc Longley retired, now we have a new era to make there impact on the game.

Pretty good that there are 4 players that are likely to get a look in if not play in the NBA next year. Just for interest sake thought I would put together a list of players of Aussie dudes that have played NBA and were drafted. I'm sure there is a list somewhere - this is just off the top of my head. Not including the Ricky Grace, Lanard Copeland, Darnell Mee types who played in the NBA but are now Aussies.

PLAYED NBA

Andrew Bogut - Milwaukee
Luc Lonlgey - Minnesota, Chicago, New York
Andrew Gaze - Washington, San Antonio
Shane Heal - Minnesota
Chris Anstey - Dallas, Chicago
Mark Bradtke - Philadelphia
Luke Schenscher - Chicago, Portland

DRAFTED BUT NEVER PLAYED

Ben Pepper - Boston
CJ Bruton - Vancouver ???
Brad Newley - Houston
David Andersen - Atlanta
Paul Rogers - Lakers ???

SIGNED BUT NEVER PLAYED

Simon Dwight - Toronto

Australians who played NBA:
Ricky Grace (Atlanta) - played as an Australian, after being naturalised for NBL ..

Dwight was never signed. He was offered a contract but turned it down.

Gaze, Heal, Bradtke and Schenscher were not drafted, however all won contracts.

Rogers was drafted by the Lakers, got injured, rehabbed in LA, played in Spain, was traded? to Toronto, got injured and did not play. Not a bad rehab though, watching Kobe and Carter at practices...

Dwight was offered a GUARANTEED contract by the Hornets, but turned it down...

From memory, he said that he thought he was not quite ready, then his knees degenerated about 2 seasons after that....Hindsight is a wonderful thing..
