Kidd to Mavs trade back on?

Despite the denials from Mark Cuban, it sounds like the Kidd-Mavs deal could be proceeding.

Sources told ESPN.com that the Mavericks and Nets on Wednesday reached an agreement in principle on a Kidd deal after talks had seemingly stalled last week, moving the teams to brink of completing the NBA's third blockbuster deal of the month.
The deal -- salvaged from talks on a three-way trade with Portland that developed and fizzled quickly two weeks ago -- has Dallas sending 24-year-old point guard Devin Harris, veteran swingman Jerry Stackhouse, the expiring contracts of center DeSagana Diop and swingman Devean George and guard Maurice Ager to New Jersey for Kidd and forward Malik Allen.

Sources say Dallas will also add the league-maximum $3 million in cash and send its first-round draft pick this June as well as a first-rounder in 2010.

Sources: Mavs, Nets close in on Kidd deal

Who wins this one?

Mavs are crazy to part with so much for Kidd.
Harris has 10 years, 10 YEARS left in him, Kidd would have 1-2 quality years left.

Harris, Stackhouse, Diop and George all seem to be in the rotation for the Mavs, so taking all of them out of their top 9-10-11 players is a bit of a stretch. Plus $3mill plus a First Rounder plus Ager. Thats a 6 plus $3m for 2 trade.....

Kidd, as good as he is, cant get this team to the Finals in the west. Dont think this is a good move by the Mavs, New Jersey will win in the long run because of expiring contracts, and Harris' 10 Years of service.

I'm with you hustle - it seems like a massive amount to be giving up for a player reaching the twilight of his career and an undersized PF.

Devin Harris is running that Dallas team really well right now, playing the uptempo style of basketball that has been very successful in Dallas. Diop is a big part of their big man rotation and provides them with a paint defender they so desperately need (especially when you consdier the contenders - Phoenix (Shaq and Amare), Spurs (Duncan) and the Lakers (Gasol, Bynum)) and Stackhouse is a very solid contributor off the bench..

On the other hand, New Jersey would be laughing.. someone to back up Carter/Jefferson in Stackhouse, Devin Harris to run the team and Diop to hole up the middle.

Good for NJ, bad for Dallas me thinks

Good news for the Nets with plenty of talent including a young long-term prospect in Harris.

Kidd only has 1-2 years left in him and the team is potential to choke again during the big time.

The Mavs will also be a big-man short if they ship Diop away. Dampier is the only big man on the roster and doesn't really have back-up. DJ Menga was waived and now a Laker.

Trouble for Dallas in the long run.

Sounds like Stackhouse will be bought out by the Nets and will return to the Mavs.

So its really Harris, Diop and George for Kidd and Allen.

I heard that there is a separate deal with NJ sending Antoine Wright to Dallas for a 2nd rounder.

dallas

pg kidd / barea
sg terry / jones / wright
sf howard / hassell
pf dirk / bass
c dampier

It leaves Dallas pretty light on up front. With most of the contenders in the West getting bigger, it seems like a lot to give up. But I guess that Diop wasn't playing as much this season as he had previously so maybe they think they can cover the PF/C spots with just dirk, bass and dampier.

Sounds like the deal is basically done and is in it's final stages.

Mavs Get:

Kidd
Allen

Nets Get:

Harris
Stackhouse
Diop
George
Ager

Then the Nets are going to buy out Stackhouse and Diop who will then return to the Mavs in 30 days.

So really it's Kidd for Harris, George and Ager.

There is also word a Carter for Jermaine O'neal could go down before the All-Star game.

So what's the benefit of taking Stackhouse and Diop, only to buy them out?

Is it cap space for next season?

Yeh Stackhouse is added to make the numbers work (as well as $3mil from Dallas) but to say the trade doesnt include Stack is silly, because if bought out, he has the opportunity to go anywhere! What if he signs for Cleveland? Lakers? Doesnt help Dallas, just a valuable bench contributor gone.....

Its not silly to say the trade doesn't really include Stackhouse when he has come straight out and said he has every intention of going back to Dallas.

Panther is spot on, plus whenever a deal is "player X and cash", the cash is to cover the buyout cost, at least in part.

ESPN:

With the New Jersey Nets poised to complete a blockbuster deal to send Jason Kidd back to Dallas on Wednesday night, Mavericks reserve forward Devean George has unexpectedly exercised his right to block the trade, according to NBA front-office sources. Sources close to the situation told ESPN.com that the teams verbally agreed to the deal earlier Wednesday and were preparing to submit the trade for league approval when George informed the Mavericks that he wouldn't consent to being included in the deal, which is his right based on a rare provision in his one-year contract.

Edit: Fez, you must've beaten me by about 5 seconds!

Haha, oh man. I bet Mark Cuban is loving Devean George right now. Don't they have any other bums on the bench they could substitute in the deal?

Also, on the discussion of the new and thinner front line... if Diop doesn't get bought out and return, you'd think we'd see Josh Howard pinch-hitting at the 4 for 5 minutes a game.

40ish minutes for Dirk, 25 a piece for Bass and Dampier, the rest to Howard?

BTW, you can't actually voluntarily include "No Trade" clauses in contracts anymore, Kobe is the last player in the league to have one. So if you see a reference to anyone other than Kobe having a "no trade" clause, it's just a function of their contract.

If I was Cuban I'd be majorly pissed...

I be calling up George's agent and paying out his contract for the rest of the year and telling him to "*$*# off out of my ball club" Take the money now or rot on the end of the bench never to see the daylight ever again... Also at training he'd be running full court drills ALL session.

To think a blockbuster trade is broken due to some schmuck on a one year deal that get hardly any burn, and when he does he stinks it up...

Stuff that.....i would exercise my rights as well

I found this during my morning trolls....

Devean George: The untold story

By DJ Gallo
Page 2

Dallas, Texas.

Wednesday afternoon.

Dallas Mavericks team offices.

A knock on general manager Donn Nelson's office door.

Donn Nelson: Come in.

[Devean George enters.]

Nelson: Hi, Devean. So are you ready to be a Net? We sure do
appreciate the time you've spent here in Dallas.

George: Yeah, about that. I hate to mess things up for you,
but I'm not going to New Jersey. I'm invoking my no-trade
clause.

Nelson: Ha! Good one. A no-trade clause given to Devean
George. Very funny. Like no-trade clauses are given to
average, run-of-the-mill players. Good one, Devean. We're
going to miss your sense of humor around here. I don't think
Jason Kidd is a cut-up like you.

George: No, really. I have a no-trade clause. Check my
contract.

[Tosses contract onto Nelson's desk.]

Nelson: Sweet mercy! You do have a no-trade clause! How did
this happen?

George: I think it was a typo. Probably something left in
the contract template from an offer you made to a good
player. But it doesn't matter. It's there. And I'm killing
the trade.

Nelson: But why?! Why would you do that to us? You can get
your 12 minutes off the bench anywhere. We were getting
Jason Kidd! We were finally going to win a championship!

George: You can win a championship with me. I can do
everything Jason Kidd does.

Nelson: Oh, really? Jason Kidd is a surefire Hall of Famer.
You are a spot starter.

George: I can rebound.

Nelson: Jason Kidd can rebound better.

George: I am unselfish.

Nelson: Jason Kidd is one of the most unselfish players
ever.

George: I can shoot 3s.

Nelson: Jason Kidd can & look, we have enough players who
can shoot 3s. Come on, this is ridiculous. What is the real
reason you are sabotaging us? Why won't you go to New
Jersey?

George: I don't want to uproot my family. We set down roots
here in Dallas.

Nelson: Well, that is a fair concern. I can understand that.
Wait & you aren't married. You don't have any kids.

George: Crap. I thought you would buy that one.

[Another knock at the door.]

Nelson: Come in.

[Mark Cuban comes into the room dancing the cha-cha, a
lively dance of excitement.]

Mark Cuban: Hey, dudes! Whaaaazzzzz-up!

[Cuban gives awkward high-fives to George and Nelson while
continuing to cha-cha around the room.]

Cuban: Is this trade going to be awesome or what, dawgs?
Jason Kidd, baby!

Nelson: Yeah, about that. Devean is invoking his no-trade
clause. The deal is dead.

Cuban: WHAT?!

[Cuban stops dancing for a moment. And then suddenly begins
dancing the paso doble -- an angry, aggressive dance.]

George: Yeah. Sorry, Mr. Cuban. But I want to stay here.

Cuban: How dare you cross me! Do you know what I do to
people who cross me?! Do you know what I did to Donald
Trump?

George: What? What did you do to Donald Trump?

Cuban: Well & I, um & well, I wrote a very cutting blog post
about him, that's what. And I'm going to do the same to
you.

[Cuban paso dobles over to Nelson's computer, sits down, and
begins typing a blog entry about George.]

Nelson: Oh, man. This is getting bad. We need something to
lighten the mood. Where's Avery?

[Another knock on the door.]

Nelson: Come in. Avery! I was just talking about you. I was
hoping you could lighten the mood in here a bit. Talk to me.

Avery Johnson: Talk to you about what? I don't feel like
lightening the mood. I have a splitting headache and I just
found out that my great aunt Sally is in the hospital with
the gout.

Nelson: Ah-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha! Stop! Stop it! You're killing
me! The sound of your voice gets me every time, Avery. Thank
you. You're the best. I needed that.

OK. Now, Devean. Let's get back on track. What is the real
reason you are killing this trade?

Cuban: And that's that! All done, Devean George. You have
totally been dissed on my blog. I hope you are happy with
yourself. And you're out of luck if you ever hope to be
interviewed or profiled on HDNet. Sucks to be you.
R-O-T-F-L-M-A-O!

George: Did you just say "R-O-T-F-L-M-A-O"?

Cuban: Yes. L-O-L.

George: Jeez, you are such a dork.

[Cuban creepily stares George down. He then turns and
quicksteps out of the room, taking Avery Johnson as his
partner.]

[Another knock at the door.]

Nelson: Yes. Come in.

Dirk Nowitzki: Hallo.

Nelson: Hello, Dirk.

George: Hi, Dirk.

Nowitzki: Devean, I am happy that Jason Kidd is coming to
Dallas. But I am sorry to see you go. I have made you a mix
tape of David Hasselhoff love ballads. They express what I
feel toward you. I hope you enjoy it. Here you go.

[Nowitzki hands mix tape to George.]

Nelson: Dirk, bad news. Devean here has nixed the trade. He
has a no-trade clause.

Nowitzki: [Loud cursing in German.] No! This can't be! Jason
Kidd and I were going to be playoff magic. He would draw
the double-team and then feed me the ball for wide-open,
fall-away jumpers at the top of the key. [More loud cursing
in German.]

Devean! Give me back my Hasselhoff mix tape! You don't
deserve it!

[Nowitzki rips the Hasselhoff tape away from George and
clutches it to his heart.]

Nelson: Dirk, just calm down a minute. Are you angry at
Devean right now?

Nowitzki: Yes.

Nelson: Do you hate him even?

Nowitzki: Yes.

Nelson: Then give him the Hasselhoff tape. He definitely
deserves it.

[Nowitzki gives the tape back to George and leaves the room,
muttering, "Auf Wiedersehen."]

Nelson: OK, Devean. We are finally alone again. Now tell me
the real reason you are killing this Jason Kidd trade.

[A cell phone rings.]

George: Excuse me. I have to take this.

[George whispers into the phone: "Yeah, I'm here with him
now. Just a minute." And then hands the cell phone to
Nelson.]

Here, it's for you anyway.

Nelson: Umm & hello? Who is this?

Mitch Kupchak: It's Mitch Kupchak. Sorry to hear your Jason
Kidd trade fell through.

Nelson: Wait & how did you know about that already?

Kupchak: Oh, I knew before you did, Donn. Remember who you
signed Devean away from two years ago?

Nelson: Yeah, you guys -- the Lakers.

Kupchak: Exactly. He signed with you, but he is still
working as an operative for us. Enjoy watching us destroy
you in the playoffs with Kobe and Gasol while Jason Kidd
rots away in New Jersey! Bwaah-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!
Bwaah-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!

Nelson: Noooooooo! Kupchaaaaaaaaaak!

Supposedly it's to do with some veteran's bonus pay he gets if he sees out the year with Dallas, but if he is traded this falls through. So in hindsight I can now see why he has done it as he needs to look out for himself first. I'm sure Cuban will throw enough money at him to change his mind. On ESPN last night they said George was still interested in talking to NJ to see how the see him fitting in to the team.

Yeah, it's all to do with his Bird Rights (where players after three seasons with the team are paid over and above the salary cap. This came about where Boston was to re-sign Larry Bird, but didn't have enough cap room, so the NBA instituted this rule...).

Anyway, George had to waive his Bird Rights - which would have severely hindered his ability to make a good salary next year (whatever you think of his play) - for the deal to go through.
