where do all the Refs go???

Where do the Refs that do fridays go on sat?
Should Div 1 Refs do Saturdays as well or just get the "cream" games?

You will find a lot of the younger ones do Sat mornings too but the Panel refs and SRDP's, who ref Seniors during the week, have the day off so that the newer Level 0 and 1 refs start their training process. Most stadiums pair up a "senior" ref with the newies so they have someone to learn from. This hopefully ensures more are coming thru and they progress to Thursday nights and eventually Friday nights as they move up. Its a good system and with support is surely a step forward. Now if only we could get the coaches and parents not to whinge so much and abuse...............!

but Me3 if only the best five players played every minute of every game the second five would never improve

if the Div 1 coach coached every divison other coaches wouldn't have the opportunity to improve

if higher level refs were out each and every game other refs wouldn't learn. and the higher level refs would walk away from the game burnt out.

But if an ABA coach chose to play their U18's because they have done such a poor job of keeping their ABA players, you will look bad, and results will be poor.

Then the U16's will need to play U18's and get flogged each week, because they are not up to it.

Then the div 2 and U14 players would need to play U16, they would be so out of their depth that they will quit.

Then the U12's coming up will have nobody to play with the following year. So they wont have any training base.

Now the next group of U10's will come up to train against the U12 group that have no training base because the U14's have quit.

They will think that they are doing well because they are winning the drills at training. But realistically when they go against other clubs or states they aren't even close to good enough.

And it will become a self perpetuating Pooh-Pooh platter that never understands how good the expected level is because the current is so far behind, and the newbies are never shown what level they should be at to move forward.

So, to fix the solution more GOOD ref's who have quit need to be recruited. The ref's that are in place need to be managed and educated better so that they feel they can improve more and are valued. Training needs to be run each week and mentoring down the hierarchy needs to be organised and adhered too. Formal standards need to be met, and more referee's engaged in the development process.

that's probably the worst explanation ever given!!! we're not asking kids outside their age group to play against older kids when they're not meant to.

You lost me Not suprised??????

Im not asking that they do all games on Sat but be there to ref with a junior ref.

They could learn from the experienced ref on the day and also watch them work when not on the court themselves.

ballin is life,

No, but ref's are being expected to ref outside of their ability(age group) due to there being no senior ref's and junior ref's needing to move up.

Not surprised,

There are no 'age groups' for refs. A better way to explain it is that a ref of Division 3 standard is forced to ref Division 1 due to lack of numbers.

No different to some clubs playing Division 2 or 3 standard players in Division 1 due to lack of quality numbers.

No different to some clubs being forced to have Division 2 or 3 standard coaches, coaching Division 1 due to a lack of quality numbers.

IMO this is a broader issue then just refereeing. Basketball levels in SA have declined over the past 5 years in every aspect, refereeing, coaching, administrating and as a result in playing. To single out referees or to suggest senior referees give more time when they already give more time then senior coaches or players is IMO unfair.
