A new stat

S.W.A- Score Without an Assist

I bet there are heaps of players in the NBA that get a high % of their field goals as a result of another player drawing a double team and making the pass.

By seeing which players make the most field goals by creating their own shot, we could better identify the games top players.

Hence, score without an assist.

It's not perfect, a lot of players work real hard to get open for a shot (Rip Ham for one)but there are others who really only score when set up (Bowen).

Does this stat already exhist?
Can someone provide a link if it does?

you mean like scoring by creating the opportunity yourself? like taking on your defender, etc?

The other side of the story is the good assist but the shooter misses the shot.(discount the shooter being fouled)

How many times do you see a great assist and the shooter misses? Does that mean the assist is worthless (or worth less, statistically...)?

HotRod, I guess stats are about proportions and comparisons as much as anything. If shooters are hitting at 40%, they'll generally do that whether the pass comes from PG1 or PG2 meaning you still have a reasonable point of comparison between the two.

Don't mind the idea of a stat for players creating off their own back, even just for a bit of fun.

That would be a great way to create even more ball hogs.

HotRod, surely an assist which doesn't lead to a score is just...a pass?

An assist gets its special status and name because the guy who caught what, up until that moment, was just a pass then proceeded to put the ball in the hole.

In any case, here's the name for your new 'near-assist' category: a 'passist' (not quite an assist, but more than a pass)!

You're welcome. :)

What signifies an assist in the NBA - they seem to get them pretty easily in comparison to the NBL.
