City of Sydney Basketball buys Kings name for $20k

There's an article on the Daily Telegraph site about the Sydney Kings name being saved for a (I thought cheap) cost of $20,000: First steps to Sydney Kings return

Association president Andrew Lazaris will now look at getting together a consortium to relaunch the Kings in the new 2009-10 competition that will replace the struggling NBL.

"The important thing is the Sydney Kings name is still alive," Lazaris said. "We decided the buy the name to protect the Kings and make sure it doesn't get into the wrong hands again."
The article notes that the University of Wollongong picked up a portable court and rings from the Kings firesale for $80k. Wonder who got the mascot costumes?

Elsewhere today, on the Herald Sun site, Scott Derwin notes that the NBL expects Fox to be back and broadcasting the league but that they're "not overly optimistic" about retaining the sponsorship of Hummer.

The journalist really missed a trick by not giving this article the headline "Lazaris to raise Kings from the dead".
