Stupid decisions in the last 3 minutes .
Anstey trying to hit mills backdoor with bosh and co right there .
Mills long 3 not needed .
Anstey fade away 3 , bad news .
And we should never allow them another chance to score , mills to penetrate with a couple to go , worst case scenario is no score , now we give them a 3 , momentum and a 12 point lead .

things boomers really need to do:

1) FINISH OFF - to many lay ups that should have been an easy two.
2) RUN BACK - IF you miss your layup, dont have a cry about it, get your ass back and dont let them get a huge dunk with mills the only one back.
3) BOX OUT - way too many easy boards, that are just getting put back with a dunk.
4) Anstey - if your open, shoot the three, we know you can make it, so just do it already.

Good Signs:
1) Mills, you gun. showing some great stuff and potential, really running the point well.
2) Newley - having his way with the defence, getting to the ring quite easily, now if only he and everyone else can finish the f***** play.
3) Overall game speed - we are controlling the game speed quite alot, slowing it down, which is better for us, just we are being let down by some stupid passes and giving them 5-7 point runs, we cant afford that.

So far, both good and bad signs, at this rate if they can fix a few things, it will be within ten at 3/4 time. if we dont do these, well 5th is good isnt it?

Anstey was awesome in 1st quarter. Barlow solid. Bogut OK, Neilson OK, CJ solid, Newley awesome. Say-ville was even OK to my surprise. Ando playing well but needs to finish-here has let us down in that area.
Mills awesome except right near the end of half. Would like to see Redhage injected in third to rack up a few hard fouls on Lebron and Melo.

Yeah, agreed, we needed to hold the ball for the final shot and get a good one. Aside from a stretch in the 2nd where we got suckered into run and gun, our guys are doing a good job of not playing too fast. Need more of that.

A 30 point loss, which is about what most decent teams have been subject to from the redeem team. i guess its on to 2010 worlds now i guess? what could the team look like for that? will we have Bruton still? and im pretty certain neilson is going to confirm his international retirement. but then again, its looking like were gonna have more guyys in the NBA..... i think, that our rankin in the olympics should finnish as equal 5th or 6th.... for a young team, thats not too much off what gaze, longley, bradtke did in seoul right? so future is bright.

Dana,

If Kobe, LeBron etc had the personality, flair and were down to earth like the master himself (MJ) then the NBA and basketball in places like Australia would be booming.

Bird, Johnson and Jordan all achieved more and were better players in their times then what LeBron has been to date and none of them needed to carry on the way he does.

The NBA has no real stars like the 80s/90s which can be marketed in the same way and that's been a huge problem for basketball generally.

I love watch the US team play on one hand simply because of the talents they have but on the other hand it annoys the crap out of me to see the way they carry on. This team came to this Olympics not just to win back the gold but to show the world they were respectful of the Olympics, what it represents and the teams they play against.

They might succeed in winning the gold (and I for one hope they don't) but they certainly haven't succeeded at anything else they wanted to.

I so hate the USA team. The only likeable guy on that team is Tayshaun Prince. I want Spain, Greece, Argentina or Lithuania to beat them so badly now!

Nice dunk from ingles near the end and his 3 3's were also nice. Mills looks impressive and pesky and reminds me of ricky rubio with his overall attitude - especially in defence.

I think the refs were star struck and missed a lot of fouls on USA foul shots - guys like melo, Kobe, Lebron and Boozer all had hands on the back of their guys to push them out illegally.

LOL and did anyone else hear the other commentator (dittmar?) at tehe nd say that the opals were bowing out in the quarter finals vs the USA. He should have said boomers. And he also referred to Worthington on a 'fast break' when Wortho was simply bringing the ball up into a half court offence.

I think that Gaze is a good comentator and makes the game exciting to watch aswell as informing the viewer with knowledge that we do not know.

Who'd have thought that Mills would step up like this??? Finally a decent Boomers PG!

Realistically - the Boomers did a great job. Just look at the smiles on the USA team and staff - they were super relieved to get out of this after the first half (####ing Worthington and THAT 3pter).

Newley has got a pretty good game on him now...

Ingles looks good and might have made a decent decision pulling out of the draft...

Glen Saville went out on a good note (forgetting his first two games) - i remember seeing his coming out party in the U-19's WCs in Greece back in '95... When he was pretty much Sam MacKinnon's analouge - good job Sav!!!

I am in awe of Lebron's talent.

Every time I watch him during these Olympic games, it's like wow!

Yet I perceive him to be such an arrogant, seemingly ignorant man-child. In my personal opinion, he really typifies the ego driven, "look at me" American attitude that is stereotyped throughout the media.

He could possibly be one of the best ever players of his game statistically, but he will never have the gracious attitude of the very best..Magic, Michael, Larry, Bill etc. Even to our very own A.Gaze.

Pity.

I guess there's a slim line between confidence and arrogance. I also think that as Aussies the majority are often too critical of confidence/arrogance. ie 'Tall poppy syndrome.' I think sometimes a bit of arrogance is better than lack of confidence and so it can carry you a bit further. I wish more aussies showed a bit of what some people call arrogance. Specially if they can back it up. Also hate it when people criticise athletes for not getting to number 1. I know people who think the same of Lleyton as what some here say about LeBron. I guess that's the beauty of free speech and the ability to express our opinions.

Their arrogance in a way was a compliment to the Boomers' ability. I say that because they looked like they needed to advertise the fact that they were a superior team. If they hadn't rated Australia that well, there would have been no need for them to emphasise that.

Never heard the usually very laid back Gaze getting so fired up! Nothing like watching the green and gold to invoke some passion in Drewey.

Pretty good effort from the Boomers tonight sticking with the US for almost a half. It's a shame that they took the first two games to warm up because they honestly deserved to advance higher than the quarters given they way they played tonight, against Lithuania and against Russia.

Mills is a legend - so fun to watch and always impacting the game whether it be picking someone's pocket on the rebound, drawing an offensive foul or finishing an impossible lay-up on the fast break.

If there was one guy who disappointed me in the game tonight and throughout the tournament it was David Andersen. He can't catch the ball, can't finish close to the bucket, is slow laterally and generally looked out of his depth which is a surprise given he's playing at such a high level for one of the best clubs in Europe.

Dana , it is quite easy to be charitable when you are making $ 30+ m a year . It is not confidence it is arrogance , ego , lack of respect and him having a general woody over the thought of his own reflection .
he is a bad example for kids growing up playing sport . He is an exceptional athlete and very good bballer , but a knob is a knob and he is king knob .

I liked how our young players took the game to the US, even if the result was already decided. Throw in Jawai, Ogilvy etc and the future looks bright. Not sure about Wortho making the NBA though ;) I hope the games have made Houston think more seriously about giving Newley some burn.

I used to like LeBron, there once was a sense of humility in his play but that seems to have gone out the window, I just don't like how he carries himself on court anymore.

Slightly OT, but with all the attention Ricky Rubio is getting, I wonder if Mills will get anywhere near the coverage after the Olympics has finished..

I think the us get things a little tough at times, they can be arrogant but until somebody beats them they have the right to be. every other team that smack talks and goes to fight the us are considered great for not backing down to them, but when the us do it its "there arrogant assholes". I think it isnt all peaches and cream being them guys, everybody is against them and wants to see them lose. so why should they be so polite when there hated before they step on the floor. but with saying all that, GO BOOMERS, were gonna be van exel like awesome in 2012!!

Decent effort by the guys, but we just couldn't match them on the boards. As someone said earlier, Lebron, Kobe and Wade were getting in to grab rebounds at will. Thats partly our guards fault and partly the one of the flaws of playing a zone.

Also, our bigs were clearly over matched strength wise by Bosh, Howard and Lebron. As a result they were too busy putting a body on their guy and consequently were not in position to 'go get' the rebound, which was usually grabbed by the more athletic US wings.

I think our energy dropped in the 3rd, so our cuts stopped and our offence stagnated. Kobe really got in a groove there and showed how to blow a game open.

Disappointing that Bogut was not able to have much impact. He has struggled with the way the intl game is called and foul trouble has hampered him a lot in this tournament.

The people who are bagging him need to understand the type of player he is though. He doesn't run around the NBA dunking over guys like Howard and Bosh. He has an impact by playing a role within a structured offence. To do that, he needs to be given the ball in the right positions, and he needs to have guys making good cuts and spreading the floor to give him passing options. If you were expecting him to score 20 by posting up Howard all night you've got the wrong idea.

Also, the game was over at the point Bogut went down with his ankle. If we were still in it, I'm sure Bogut would have tried to play on.

Anyway, lots to build on with this team. If Mills can learn to run an offence, as well as blow by people at will in the next two years, he will make everyone on this team better for the World Champs. Newley is an excellent backcourt partner for him. With experience, those guys should be one of the top backcourts in intl play over the next 8 years. Barlow was solid and Ingles keeps showing enormous potential, but needs to get in the gym to build his strength and show some real consistency in the NBL next year.

I agree with most of the posters here. Anyone who has CHOSEN1 tattoed on their back and their own marketing slogan (Witness) on their leg, and wants to have their own face in gold on the side of their ridiculously huge mansion in an average sububran neighbourhood, is a dickhead. And that's forgeting him not signing the Darfur petition Ira Newble wanted to start.

But I highly doubt that he has ever had any 'No men' around him, just people wanting to be a part of the LeBron family....

And guys, I know we are hurt, but let's lighten up on Bogut. The guys is 15-10 NBA big, so crapping on about how he is shit and doesn't deserve to be in the NBA is a bit silly. He didn't exactly deliver in this tournament, but he wasn't alone in that regard.

Agree with you EC. The US came out really hard tonight and didn't let up until the game was iced. They wouldn't have done that if they didn't respect Australia's ability. Kobe especially brought his A game in the 3rd and showed how a great player can break a game open.

Bogut (C) - NBA

Jawai (C/F) - NBA
Ogilvy (C/F) - NCAA now, likely to be in the NBA
Maric (c) - Europe
Baynes (C) - NCAA now, Likely to be in Europe
Newley (G) - Europe, maybe NBA
Mills (G) - NCAA now, likely to be in NBA
Barlow (G/F) - Likely to be in NBL or Europe
Ingles (G) - Likely to be in NBA or Europe
Worthington (F) - Likely to be in NBL or Europe
Bruce (G) - Likely to be in NBL or Europe
Nevill (C) - NCAA now, likely to be in Europe

I'm salivating at the thought!

We can still finish 5th though at THESE Olymopics - Go Boomers!

DB5 - re: Ingles - One more minute and he would have been fouled out!

Once again, the Boomers have shown they can match it with the rest. A good, if not very good tournament for us, but yet again we are left with the question mark of what could have been. Come out ready to play against Croatia (and not let them kill us from the three), and we could have been taking it to a wounded Spain (after being demoralised by the US) rather than getting the US in the quarters. Oh well, there is always next time.

I can't believe that I am defending Lebron - sure, he comes acros as arrogant, over confident etc but he is pretty much expected by most in the US to carry this team. He and Kobe will be the fall guys if team USA fails to win gold. I see intent focus from Lebron, not so much arrogance, and a business like approach where each opponent must be defeated, all the while sending a strong message to their next foe.
Forget about Lebron's history, and just look at these Olympics. He is carrying a huge burden, and to me is just getting the job done.

Its funny when everyone says 'why can't he be more like the stars of yesterday - MJ, Bird etc. Larry Bird was one of the most arrogant players in the history of the NBA! One of the biggest trash talkers of all time. And MJ, he is the GOAT, and I will always be a huge fan, but taking a free throw with your eyes closed? Imagine if LBJ did that - this forum would be in melt down!

And the other thing - you guys are too harsh on Worthington. Last night especially I thought he was solid on the boards, whereas our 4 big men were too soft.

The Bolt / Team USA comparison is one of the worst I've ever read.

Bolt plays it up to the crowd, to the cameras before and after the race. But, and this is the exact reason the comparison is retarded, is he does have humility.

Listen to him when he talks, he's obviously done the same interview with every commentator yet he's gracious in winning.

Also, unlike Team USA last night, Bolt hung around after the 200m final, went over to the crowd, played it up with the other place-getters, arm-in-arm.

Yeah he's got a bit of confidence to him, but he's a showman and most people have warmed to him. I hate Team USA for their arrogance, I love Bolt for his ability and showmanship. He's everything Team USA could, and should be.

I love both - I dont understand the hate for this USA team? Im not a big Lebron fan because he is the most selfish arrogant piece of shit, but whats wrong with the others? They really do care about winning and take it very seriously (Kobes been at EVERY single bball game with a notepad and pen ffs!)...They respect each opponent and take them very seriously (Kobe NEVER backs down from a defensive challenge - and someone asked him are you guardning Mills, he shrugged and just said 'too quick').

What do they do that piss people off so much?
Its just people loving to hate and not being able to accept the fact that the USA ARE the best team in the world - and by far.

90 percent of their crowds want to see them put on a show - so they put on a show, its just the way they play. Its hard to stay 100 percent focussed when you beat every side by 30-50...They dont do anything that we didnt do against lithuania that time (guys putting the 3 symbol up, laughing, anstey and that stupid tongue thing).

They intimidate opponents and are way above anyones level of talent and its why they will walk away with gold.

And if thats the way you feel - dont watch the NBA next season...

Having said that - I am shattered that the Boomers campaign is over like that - when I think we are much better than the placings say

yeah I have a go at LeBron - the guy is arrogant s*** and thinks his better then he is but has not really achieved yet - not 1 gold medal, not one World Title, no NBA title. It's his type of arrogance that give these guys a bad name - there's a fine line between arrogance and confidence

Now anyone who believes his worth a Billion dollars for bouncing a ball around - that is pure arrogance. theres scientists working for a cure for cancer who don't get close to that - and if we as a society prefer to giv a billion dollars for someone bouncing a ball around before people trying to make a better world - who stuggle for funding - then we as a society better have a close look at oursleves and our priorities
