Government to review digital channel restrictions

Communications Minister Stephen Conroy said he would review a contentious rule that currently bans major sporting events on any digital channels launched by the big three commercial networks next year...

PBL Media (owner of the east coast Nine Network stations), the Seven Network and Network Ten have the right to start second channels in standard definition digital from January 1 next year, but currently will not be able use those channels to show the AFL, NRL, Text (sic) (Mod: Text cricket doesn't sound too exciting...) cricket, the Australian Open or other major sport under a rule imposed by the former Howard government.

I do wonder if this would work against basketball (assuming it's not classified as a major sport). A network who can't show those prime competitors, could look to attract sports fans with basketball? Well, we can hope.
