Worthington named NBL Round 3 POTW

NBL NAMES WORTHINGTON PLAYER OF THE WEEK

The National Basketball League (NBL) has named Boomers star Mark Worthington as the Player of the Week for Round Three after leading his South Dragons team to a perfect 2-0 record for the week.

'Wortho' started the week in style by scoring 20 points and adding six rebounds, three assists and one steal as the Dragons scored a 107-90 road victory over the Gold Coast Blaze at the Gold Coast Convention Centre on Thursday night. The blue-collar forward, who recently returned from the Beijing Olympics, went 5-of-11 from the field and 8-of-9 from the free throw line.

Worthington then backed up to score 19 points and contribute five rebounds, nine assists and one steal as the Dragons notched a 114-95 road victory against the Wollongong Hawks at the WIN Entertainment Centre on Saturday. He shot 6-of-9 from the field and 6-of-8 from the stripe.

For the week, Worthington averaged 19.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, 6.0 assists and 1.0 steals to showcase his versatility.

Perth Wildcats duo Shawn Redhage and Darnell Hinson were two other red-hot contenders for the NBL's weekly honour. Redhage averaged 21.5 points, 7.5 rebounds and 5.0 assists for the round, and Hinson 18.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 3.0 steals as the Wildcats split their two games.

Others in consideration for Player of the Week included Kirk Penney (NZ), CJ Bruton (NZ), Glen Saville (Wollongong), Dusty Rychart (Wollongong), Jacob Holmes (Adelaide), Luke Schenscher (Adelaide), Cortez Groves (South), Matthew Burston (South), James Harvey (Gold Coast), Ebi Ere (Melbourne), Rod Grizzard (Melbourne), Larry Abney (Cairns), and Kelvin Robertson (Townsville).
Any notable inclusions or omissions? Surprised to see two Cats featured despite going 1-1. Could've put Kelvin Robertson in the runner-up mention for his big win in his 200th game?

Interesting to see that 2 sixers got honourable mentions in a 38 pt loss. Jacob probably deserved a mention, but based purely on statistical output Luke's probably a bit lucky.

At the same time, it might just be an indicator of the NBL's obsession with player of the week nominees. There were what, maybe 7-8 games last round, and 14 players nominated. I reckon it would be better to see 4-5 players across the whole league mentioned each round, rather than 1-2 per team. What does everyone else think?

I'm glad to see that he took precious time out of his busy schedule of lobbying players for an 8 team comp to turn up to a game and play well.

I don't mind the list of honourable mentions as it keeps things of interest to fans of all teams, but as you said Jordan - two mentions in a big loss could be a bit of a stretch.
