Why should teams give up their names?

If the new league goes ahead why should teams give up their names for example adelaide, perth and melbourne having long standing clubs and still people know this well a small majority. Does anyone really care about new names for teams?

They should not give them up. We are not the f'ing NSL, there are no racial ties to the names or serious fragmentation among fans. Some teams have spent considerable amounts to try and build up their team brand. A ridiculous, flawed recognition amongst a heavily flawed report.
The report should have suggested we start to kick the ball around too.

Where exactly does it say that all teams will, for an undeniable fact, have to give up their names?

Bloody hell mate, settle down.
Yes, some of the teams have built a long history, but as long as they don't move cities while keeping the same nickname,(eg. the 36ers mov going to melbourne and becoming the melbourne 36ers etc.) its not really that big of a deal.

It's to do with ownership of the names and relinquishing control, rather than actually changing the names themselves.

In the whole scheme of things, with there being so much work to do, I highly doubt their priority would be to actually change any teams' successful branding or names- maybe the drama with the Spirit was the motivation for that?
I don't see them actually changing that aspect that's working.

Not giving up their names as in being forced to change them, giving up ownership of them - e.g., we won't have that situation where some private entity owns an old team name (like Newcastle Falcons or whatever) and can limit the NBL's options.

I'd say that the NBA has some level of ownership of NBA team names, but might be wrong.
