Point guards in the NBL

It's now common knowledge that Brett Maher is seeking to round out his basketball career with some playing experience in Europe. Should he be successful in finding an opportunity, the 36ERS will be in need of a point guard.

The unanimous first preference amongst fans appears to be Darnell Mee.

If Mee were not available, who are the other options?

Quick, Kendall, Robertson -- all on 2 year deals I think?

Would you start Hill? I think he might be a year off leading a team in clutch situations, although he will have a season of SEABL this year to help him, but he won't be playing point there, right?

Cox in Perth. Rucker, no one in Melbourne, Kavossy Franklin? Caporn at the Hawks.

No-one in Melbourne?

What about D-Mac?

He's only one of the best point guards the league has ever had. Doesn't have a great shot and he's old, but he can defend, is the best passer in the league, and is outstanding at running and organising an offense.

I left him out because I assume that he was going to be playing out his career with the Tigers. Same could possibly be said for Frog Rucker too. I left Ricky Grace off the list too.

Tait in NZ. No one will want Henare surely?

darnell would be great but we would have to cut willie or dusty?

i'd go luke martin on what i have seen this year

i like what i've seen of brad hill but i don't think he is a point - i know there are people that think that brett isn't either, but he gets the job done

Mee is playing under Austarlian citizenship now i think so we wouldn't have to cut darnell.

Would brett come back to play for the 6ers after his euro stint?

According to my contacts at Wollongong, Mee is still an import, and has not naturalised.

Why do you need a point guard. I have been to every sixers game this year and apart from the last game no teams look to put pressure on any point guards. I would have Jake or Hill handling the ball and use my money on an athlete that can play anywhere from 2, 3, 4 spots and handle the ball occasionly.

Pommy or Czech,
Point guards do much more than bring the ball up the floor. They need to run the right plays at the right time, make sure the tempo is right, get the right people the ball at the right time in the right spot. Holmes and Hill are good players but you can't just throw them the ball and say run the point. Hill for example, would need at least a few years years before he can run an NBL team. Sure give them the opportunities occasionally and let them learn but they aren't ready yet.
