Well I'm sorry to say but there isn't that many seven footers around. Also don't encourage them too much otherwise Axel Dench will be back in the league next season!

Daniel Johnson at the Tigers is potential plus, and there is every chance that over the next 1-2 years a number of young Aussie bigs will return from US Div 1 Colleges, including the likes of:

- Luke Nevill 216cm Senior (Utah)
- Aron Baynes 208cm Senior (Washington State)
- Tom Jervis 213cm Senior (Troy)
- Tim Lang 206cm Senior (Stetson)
- Alex Opacic 208cm Senior (Furman)

A few other young Aussie centre's that may return at some point also include:

- Ben Allen 211cm Junior (Saint Marys)
- Matt Maden 201cm Junior (Gardner-Webb)
- Matt Massey (Southern Utah)
- AJ Ogilvy 211cm Sophomore (Vanderbilt)
- Graeme Radford Sophomore (Stetson)

Ogilvy is more likely to make it in the NBA, whilst Nevill and Baynes may well head for the cash in Europe.

There are also some handy young Aussie centres playing Div II college ball, so there are plenmty of positives on the horizon.

If you want more bigs in the league, you should look at feeding them more battery farm chickens with all those extra hormones in it.

Nothing helps young kids grow up big and strong by chemically enhanced Chicken.

i mean good bigs,LC seems to get it.
the reason that the opals are a great team is that they play an international style game at home.
the boomers players from the nbl dont.
while thre nbl has some great individuals and some good teams it is along way from the international game.
eg the olympics, in particular the first game which cost us a crack at the medals, the boomers couldnt adjust to playing WITH or AGAINST good bigs.
the 5 spot has been continually watered down in the nbl, teams opting for smaller mobile 4/5 or 5 that shoots 3's ??
one of the main culprits is coach goorjian who introduced that style to fit with his defensive plan.
its hurting us internationally!!

I'm with you skull.

There is and has been a dearth of legitimate centre's playing in the NBL for many years now - and even when there were they were few and far between.

Anstey has dominated the NBL for a number of years now, and with Big Luke on the scene he has made an impact as well. Khazzouh is on the rise, but is now gone (for now anyway). But who else is there at the present time?

Even go back 15-20 years ago, we had Aussies Borner, Bradtke and Dorge. Really, only Bradtke could lay claim to being a success at International level. And Dorge only got a gig as we had no depth at centre,a nd would sit on the bench at international level when Longley returned to play for the Boomers.

I think Daniel Johnson at the Tigers has huge promise but is at least 2-3 years away from beginning to realise that potential (he left College early to come back to Aus). If Aron Baynes and Luke Nevill come back to play in the NewBL, however unlikely that is, it can only further strengthen our league. these two are quality players, as is Ogilvy and Ben Allen. The jury is still out on the other Aussie bigs playing NCAA that I previously outlined. Time will only tell as to whether they arev gopod enough to play NewBL.

It would be be great to see a balance of our good bigs playing at home ad abroad, as it can only enhance the competition here but also that of the Boomers.

Can hardly complain about Goorjian there - with his NBL teams, he is employed to win games and championships. If a mobile big with range is what gets it done, so be it.

Also, it's not like there's a massive array of options - in recent years, Adelaide was left to run Mottram and Cooper - 6'9" or 6'10". Dench didn't manage to stay put with any one team. Pepper is out of the league (at least for now). Rogers is injured. Vanderjagt wasn't prioritised for a team. Behrendorff hasn't demanded major minutes.

You can only work with the options around.

i agree a coach is employed to win championships but as the euro teams showed the americans, prior to the last olympic games, you can win by being more efficient, extra passes offensively, better shot options from bigger and better pick and roll execution and making the open shot!! basically there is more than one way to skin a cat.
when coach is putting his team together he is obviously looking at his opposition and where he can break them down and goorj does a great job of that, better than anyone ever in this league!!

surely the big center setting picks or busting to center to receive is on the mind of other coaches to break down coach goorj's plan!!
the right big is the challenge to find !!
