The NBA and the travel rule

ESPN's TrueHoop has a piece on the NBA and its travel rule - how it's defined and how the rules are followed or ignored.

A quick excerpt:

In that play, Wade clearly picks up the ball and then takes two steps. But the NBA rulebook, and a hundred million basketball fans around the globe, insist players ought to get only one step after picking up their dribble like that.

Yet Borgia was ready to give him -- and every other player -- two steps in that situation.

In the conversation that follows, Borgia unravels one of the NBA's great secrets.

"We really don't reference the rulebook."

It is the lifting of the pivot foot that makes the wade move a travel.

It isnt moves like that that make people scream for a travel call, as it was tough to pick up the lifting of the pivot foot on the turn, it is the three steps in the open court or through traffic which is criminal and should be called.

But I agree with the end of the article about receiving the ball. Too many players will receive the ball then change their pivot foot, especially imports in the NBL. I think all leagues worldwide need to pick up that more consistently.
