and what was the crowd? Over 57k, to a game at homebush (supposedly a crap place to get to) on a Wednesday night and against a live Fox Coverage and in crappy wet weather.

Yeah I know its an Australian team but it kind of debunks arguments we used to keep hearing about the lack of crowds the BBall gets to games in Sydney. Probabaly shows that there is a heap of people interested in live sport in Sydney if the game is marketed and promoted properly.

People in Sydney will come to "an event". A World Cup qualifier for a sport that the rest of the planet actually gives a damn about at international level qualifies in that category. The deciding game of an NBL grand final series also does (though to a lesser extent, of course).

One of 30-odd meaningless regular season matches in a second-rate national basketball competition? Not so much, and no amount of marketing or promotion will change that.

The only way to make the NBL a sought after ticket in Sydney is to make it a hard-to-get ticket -- that is the only quality that will appeal to the Sydney psyche beyond the small core of die-hard basketball fans. That means scaling back to smaller venue that will sell out nearly every game and growing organically as people start to find that they can't just buy tickets at the gate and guarantee themselves a decent seat.

If the Kings had been given enough time to sort themselves out for last season, this is the strategy they would have pursued, and it would have probably worked. Now that they are gone, I can't see any "new" Sydney basketball franchise (or even a fake resurrection of the Kings brand for that matter) having the critical mass required to execute the first requirement of that strategy (enough fans to sell out a medium-sized venue such as the Sports Centre at Homebush). I don't think basketball in Sydney will ever work again; it certainly won't ever be revived under the NBL's current leadership and strategy (although some might argue that the way things are going with that out-of-control leadership, being dead in Sydney is the least of the league's concerns).

Statman, the game would have sold out if there was no marketing or promotion.
