League launch to keep 9 teams

EXPECT the National Basketball League to be back for another season starting in October before Basketball Australia completes its reform overhaul.

Nine teams - at this point including the Adelaide 36ers - are expected to make up the new-NBL before the reforms kick in in 2010.

That could mean a second season in 2010 running in a July-December time frame, with elite basketball then permanently locking into that playing period.

BA yesterday announced it intended to have the expressions of interest process for the new elite men's national competition finalised by next week.

That followed two days of intense talks with owners after which new BA chief executive Larry Sengstock declared "significant progress" had been made.

Sengstock will be in Adelaide today meeting with the consortium hoping to take over running of the 36ers from owner-in-absentia Mal Hemmerling who is away on holidays. In his absence, Eddy Groves' one-time Brisbane Bullets troubleshooter Jeff Van Groningen is back in town assisting the sale process by exploring options for Hemmerling.

Sale of the Distinctive Homes Dome - owned by the embattled former childcare magnate Groves, who bought the venue and team in partnership with Hemmerling in July, 2006 - also appears closer, potential buyers finally recognising it won't be "fire-sold".

"The EOI (expressions of interest) process has been a very complex and sensitive one and has required full consultation with the NBL owners," Sengstock said in a statement yesterday.

"It has required some lengthy and detailed discussions and we have been very pleased with the progress made this week towards an ultimate outcome."

Sengstock met with an ownership group including Melbourne's Seamus McPeake and South Dragons co-owner Mark Cowan.

McPeake, who recently resigned from the BA Board, is not expected to stay with the Tigers but Melbourne's other backers will ensure the venerable club survives, albeit under a different business model.

"The dialogue we had with the BA board was very fruitful and I believe we are edging ever closer to having ironed out the finer details in the blueprint for the new league," Cowan said.

"We're feeling optimistic about the outcome of the EOI and look forward to working with the BA board towards an announcement next week."

If the local consortium can secure "one or two" further investors, the nine teams would be Adelaide, Perth, Melbourne, South Dragons, Wollongong, New Zealand, Gold Coast, Townsville and Cairns. A consortium spokesperson said its bid for the 36ers was not a "fait accompli".

So are we now expecting no NewBL for 2009?

9 teams do a top five like the SANFL, leaving 1st to sit out the first round, 2 v 3 for qualifying final loser to player winer of 4 v 5

4 v 5 play in and elimination final, loser out, winner to play loser of 2 v 3 in a semi final,

winer of 2 v 3 to play no.1 in a direct entry to GF

loser to play winner of semi final

etc...

Top 4. 1v4 & 2v3 (best of 3). 2 winners play best of 5.

If you can't finish in the top half you don't deserve to be there anyway.

As for the new timeframe, please god no! AFL/NRL finals will take all the attention away from the league right in the middle of the season and most people will opt for footy than basketball unfortunately.

In turn state league will have to move as teams will be missing all of their marquee players.

Plus the great point of imports which Milhouse bought up.

Summer is the best option I think.

Sounds like a one-year interim league, and then the new NBL after that.

on imports - i wonder if australian basketball is THAT reliant on super star imports any more.
it has certainly been a trend of late to go with quality aussie players and build around it.
i know i would rather watch young aussie players that have come back from college etc busting their butts, than some lazy overpaid foreigner turning up and playing when they feel like it.

most have no or little, committment to clubs or fans.

we have some enormous potential in our junior ranks, enough to fill the 8,9 and 10 spots on most rosters in the nbl.

i think we should be investing in aussie kids futures by giving them a realistic chance to reach their potential in the nbl.

Milhouse, perhaps a clash with NBA summer league is a deliberate move to limit the number of quality imports, & therefore keep costs down.

The NBL is dead. No major sponsor, and Foxtel have dumped the league completely. Expect David Thodey to step down within the next couple of weeks and Larry Sengstock to be out of a job in very short order. They need to blow the whole thing up and start over. RIP NBL.

The subject article reads pretty good - with a 9 team launch interim league.
Cowan's happy, and 36ers - BA positive.
I was just get ready for it to be all done, next week, and I'm toey to see the sixers play.

Camel 31, Cowan can't be too happy as he has pulled his team out of the league.

Hawks ownership group stated back in jan/feb they had no confidence in BA to bring this togther and going forward.

Sydney/Brisbane did not put in a bid due to BA's criteria.

36ers (Mal) say they can't afford the $1m

Shamus voted by leaving board and now tigers.

Now the dragons leave the building.

definitely not 9 teams

Whos next perth?

Owners are voting with their feet and their money.

Ones who will miss out are

Owners/Players/coache/refs and most important supporters.

BA will still get its $ from the Gov/Associations (what $ the NBL had left)and churn on in their mediocre way.
