NBL season tip-off 2 days before afl grand final

Is it just me or is this as stupid a time to launch a revamped league which is dying for publicity as is humanly possible?

Revamped league is next season...

Timing might not be ideal, but I'm sure there are reasons they went with what they did.

Waiting 3 days couldn't have hurt, then again the opening game is cairns v NZ in auckland, not afl hotspots.

Exactly. Its a NZ hyped game, and im pretty sure they wont give a rats about the buildup to a AFL GF. So you could say technically the NBL overlaps, but it will have minimal effect on the marketing of the league. Any good work of capturing new fans for the 'new NBL' will have to be consistantly done throughout the season anyways, not soley for the first game which is played in another country!

It's almost as silly as launching a new thread within 2 hours of the overall schedule thread.

It's not so much about the first game (tipping off in NZ isn't ideal) as it is about getting word out that the league has tipped-off.

We've had a couple of years in a row (and I think this one will be similar but hopefully 2010 is different) where a number of non-hardcore fans haven't realised that the competition has started.

This decision should not have been made for the simple fact that it LOOKS unprofessional.

As a sport we are trying to build confidence in a number of areas and this decision makes the league look at best uninformed and at worst inept.

It is this perception which is damaging.

Season tip off should be in conjunction with some sort of promotional round (not women's or indigenous etc), maybe retro round or something (i dunno). It should be a blockbuster if possible in the NBL.

Who gives a shit about the AFL, we are a global sport and will not be dictated by a sport that has zero clout on the world stage. In 10 years time, the AFL will be pissed that we have decided to launch during their grand final week.:)

Basketball may well be a world sport, but that fact alone won't drag people through the turnstiles.

I would have thought it stupid to try and launch a new season when half the country is focused on the buildup to the AFL Grand Final. There is little chance to get any traction in the media, to build any excitement about a new season about to get underway. I think this was one of the problems that came about when we moved to summer in the first place.

Although, this comes from someone who wants them to run June-December. So take that as you will.

ok...so you gotta fit the season in ....so at one end you either try and finish when the afl is starting or you start when the afl is finishing ...no winners given the current season timing.

Normally Adelaide Thunderbirds get about 2000 to games. Yesterday, about 5,000 went to The Dome,to watch the T-Birds in a deal involving Port Power playing in Adelaide , that night, and AFL Womens round.

There may be ways to work together.
For example, Crows will have an interest in the 36ers.

Sengstock seems to be a Winter fan.

( January , in Adelaide , there a big crowds going to sports events , due to holidays. EG 6,200 on a Wednesday at the dome.)
Maybe AUGUST - JANUARY. could be worth considering.

Camel the Thunderbirds do not normally get 2,000.

Actually the truth of what the Thunderbirds have done is this.

Last year they sold out 3 games at ETSA park. That's 3,000.

This year they have sold out 1 game at ETSA park. That's 3,000.

They have never had a crowd smaller than 2,300.

Yesterday at the Dome they had roughly 4,000 people. Around 30 of them took up the Power deal.

The Thunderbirds do a lot of things well, and certainly have built their business thanks to the partnership with the Power. The 36ers/Crows partnership seems to have done nothing, other than having a few of the Crow boys in a box at the 36ers games.

T-Birds - Interesting reading that - thanks.

Crows- can get us a bit of sponsorship and/or cross sponsorship.

T-Birds won by 24 goals and Power won by 24points.

I just wonder whether we could make more of Crows-36ers partnership, and whether in Winter whether there could be a bit of cross media re results etc.

Great numbers - where did you get em?

The ANZ championship will not release crowd figures.
