Eric Cooks to stay with Hawks as assistant

The Wollongong Hawks have signed Eric Cooks as Assistant Coach for the 2009/10 NBL season.

Cooks has a long history with the Wollongong ahm Hawks dating back to 1997 when he joined on as a player for his first season with the club. Since that time Cooks had become an Assistant Coach and more recently as Head Coach for the better part of the previous three seasons.

A tough gig
Years ago

I thought Cooks did an extraordinary job in his tenure. His teams fought every game out to the end and were unlucky losing over 15 games over both seasons by less than 8 points.
Due to the Hawks financial predicament he had to also recruit every player but also deal with agents and work out player salaries. Cooks had the smallest budget out of any team and was well below the team salary.
Unfortunately in his first year he lost Glen Saville to Sydney for what was over half his teams budget, had to make the hard decisions and sack two poor performing imports while dealing with the Joyce fall out and a club on the brink of collapse.
Amazingly almost every player had their best career years under Cooks including Saville, Campbell, Petrie, Tragagh, Franklin, Martin, Davidson, Tait.
