Bring Back OUR South Dragons - join the movement!

It worked for Daryl Somers and Hey Hey It's Saturday, so why not a professional basketball franchise?

A "Bring Back OUR South Dragons" Facebook page has now been set up, providing an outlet for fans to show their support for the return of the 2008/09 NBL Champions.

This is the first of hopefully many steps in showing Basketball Australia, Basketball Victoria and prospective stakeholders that there is strong demand for a second Melbourne franchise, preferably the Dragons.

The initial target for this exercise is 1000 members, which is much more realistic than the Sydney Kings’ equivalent.

So spread the word to fellow social networkers and join the Bring Back OUR South Dragons group now @

If you dont want us back then fine, dont join the group, doesnt mean you have to be distasteful about it. Anyway group is going well considering it has only been up and running for a few hours. Donta Smith is now onboard aswell as other ex-Dragons fans..

Yup, basic logic obviously eludes you.

Two men decided not to join - Cowan and Geminder.

The fans have always wanted to participate, and that's what this movement is about.

Is it much more than a lot of hot air until there are actually investors with money and corporate supporters who are going to back the re-entry of a team? And they're not really going to put a heap of stock in a Facebook "movement". They'll have face to face meetings and private emails to get it done.

Wollongong and Cairns got their act together because there were big players able to get things happening. The community stuff wouldn't have got it over the line without that; e.g., the Hawks needed the Indian dude to make their stuff happen.

How many "Get the NBL on OneHD!1!!" petitions have there been? Shitloads. How many NBL games have we seen on OneHD? Zip.

The people with the money and ability to make it happen will make it happen if they wish. An online movement that includes people who might not even eventuate as paying customers, won't sway the brains and experience that will make a difference - having Donta Smith on board doesn't really mean much. What's Donta going to do (unless you pay him $250k to play), show up and buy a season ticket? Don't think so.

Maybe you have loads of spare time and nothing else to do, but it's the pre-season for 2009/10. Just sit tight and let the real potential owners organise stuff for the following season as I'm sure they're already doing.
