Eurobasket 2009 - Progress Update

Eurobasket is now well underway, with 6 places up for grabs in the 2010 World Chanmpionships in Turkey.

Here is a brief breakdown how things have unfolded so far...

Group A
Greeece 2/0
Croatia 1/1
Macedonia 1/1
Israel 0/2

Greece defeated Croatia 76-68 in their second game to assure themselves of first place in Group A. Croatia face Macedonia in their final round-robin game that will determine who finishes second. Macedonia should still get through to the next round. No surprises here so far.

Group B
France 2/0
Russia 1/1
Germany 1/1
Lativia 0/2

France has proven a revelation after only just scraping into one of the final places for Eurobasket. France accounted for a Germany side missing Nowitzki and Kaman and then took care of Latvia. However Germany threw a spanner in the works by upsetting Group B favourite Russia. Germany has to account for Latvia to progress.

Group C
Slovenia 2/0
Spain 1/1
Serbia 1/1
Great Britain 0/2

Slovenia accounted for GB and Serbia to book a place in the next round, whilst an upset loss to Serbia means that Spain needs to defeat Slovenia in the last round-robin and Serbia to defeat GB in order to progress.

Group D
Turkey 2/0
Poland 2/0
Lithuania 0/2
Bulgaria 0/2

Lithuania lost to both Turkey and Poland, meaning they have to beat Bulgaria to get trhough to the next round. Poland are exceeding all expectations and could finish top of the group if they can overcome the Turks.

Interesting tourny thus far. Worth noting is the third leading scorer in the tournament - one EJ Rowland who played for Bulgaria (they were knocked out in the preliminary round but EJ played some good ball. Still very much the same player as at Crocs, quick, aggressive but an average jumpshot.

Hey LC, almost looks like you're having a conversation with yourself in here!

Thanks for posting all this though, as it is saving me a lot of time not having to look up all the results!

Those Slovenians have done well to finish equal top of their group. Brezec isn't doing much, Nachbar is only their 3rd top scorer, their best rebounder has shot 5/10 from long range and the team as a whole has shot almost as many threes as twos!

Thans Beantown...whilst not many people may necessarily post replies, I know they read...

Slovenia continued their amazing run as they overcame Croatia in a thriller. They take on Serbia in the semi final.

The Greeks had to dig deep to get over the line against Turkey in another thriller! They now face Spain in their semi final.

All 4 semi finalists have automatically qualified for the 2010 World Championships.
