Sports Illustrated namedrops Aussies in college

A recent Sports Illustrated (the Feb 21 issue, with LeBron on the front for those of you playing at home) has a big profile on Mr A. Bogut kicking arse this year.

While this is obviously very cool, there was nothing new or exciting in it that us forum-dwellers wouldn't know, so won't bore everyone with a recap.

What was interesting was that they did have a sidebar where they had a bit about each of 10 other Aussies they thought most prominent on the college scene:

I won't post what they said about each of them as it would take too long, but happy to do indviduals if requested:

Aaron Bruce (plays at Baylor; currently ranked no. 2 freshman scorer in the nation)

Chris Cameron (Louisana-Lafayette)

Ian Crosswhite (Oregon)

Martin Iti (Charlotte)

Blagoj Janev (New Hampshire)

Daniel Kickert (St Mary's)

Matthew Knight (Loyola-Marymount)

Alex Loughton (Old Dominion)

Aleks Maric (Nebraska)

Luke Schenscher (Georgia Tech)

Actually, I will put the entry for Crosswhite, as it's intriguing:

"Much was expected from Ducks' top returning scorer and rebounder (12.5ppg, 5.0rpg, 56.2% shooting last season, but after subpar play he was suspended indefinitely on Feb. 9 for "violation of team rules".

Search for "crosswhite" on this forum to see some previous info on his plight.

Crosswhite, Schescher and Cameron were at the AIS with Forman and Holmes a few years back. Schenscher is an NBA chance, Crosswhite was an outside shot but won't get there now, and Cameron will probably be back in the NBL I think.

Bruce will go NBA in a few years...as may Blagov. You'll see that U19 generation dominating the Boomers scene for awhile yet.

Thanks Isaac. It's a shame about Crosswhite as he can obviously hoop, but just hasn't got his proverbial together. He played for NSW at the National U/20s in Adelaide a couple of years ago and looked very good.

A couple of other players got mentioned in the article: Luke Nevill who's signed to go to Utah, and Ben Allen who's going to Indiana.

Yeah, I saw him play in Adelaide at that competition. They faced Matt Burston, Liam Rush (both with Wildcats) and Adam Caporn (with Hawks) from WA in the final. Also playing for NSW were Larry Davidson (now with Hunter), Josh Morgan (Hunter), Graeme Dann (Kings development player) and I can't remember who else.

I reckon a dude called Kane who played for NSW and who had a hyphenated surname is now playing for the Gong.

Didn't a certain dunking and three-point fiend also known as O. Forman play for SA as well after winning the same tournament's MVP a year earlier as a bottom-age U?

Or am I way, way off?

That's a scratch and sniff sticker for you, coach k. Nice job.

You'll get a gold star if you can tell me what a "bottom-age U" means from my last post. My typing skills simply aren't Bogut-like at the moment.

I reckon Janev played in that NSW team as well but I'm struggling to think of who was in SA's team, besides Forman, who I'm pretty sure was there. I think Holmes was eligible to play but had that foot problem at the time.

I understand the bottom age - what is the U though?
Sullivan, Haydon (played for Holmes?), Marston, Andrew Mason, Schee.....

I think I was going to type U20 or something like that, but just couldn't get it done.

I need John Salley screaming over my shoulder as I type:

"NO LET DOWN! NO LET DOWN!"

Holmes had his foot injury, yes. Oscar played. I think Ng, Younie, Hambour, Haydon were some others from the SA squad.

They lost (from memory) to QLD in the bronze medal game. QLD had Cameron Tragardh (now with Crocs) and Ryan Thompson (was at AIS, was involved with Okafor's college -- which one was that again??).

Earlier, SA had beaten the highly fancied NSW team in an awesome game.

I think the results used to be online, but I can no longer find them.

Yeah I reckon you are on the money Isaac. You mean Connecticut.
I think Thompson is still there, maybe getting a chance to play this year? I remember that SA NSW on court three, did SA need to win it to go to the medal rounds?

Possibly. And it might have taken NSW from top spot on the ladder. NSW had, by far, the better team, but SA took them apart. Definitely an upset at the time. Wish those boxscores were still around. I had recently got a digital camera and took a few photos at those games, so could probably recognise most of the SA team from those.

While talking about U20 MVPs: does anyone know who won the men's and women's MVPS for the 20s championships that finished a few days ago?

Surely someone from the Tasmanian team had to be a chance for the women's MVP. ;)

I remember that SA NSW game. From what I remember of the SA squad there was Oscar, Marsden (captain I think), Shep, Hambour, Ng and a few others. I remember I wasn't overly impressed with Crosswhite and thought that Hambour actually had his measure on the night. A certain Phil Smythe was also in attendance for that game.

After the game Crosswhite whipped his shirt off and did a few dunks which I thought was an unusual thing to do, but whatever, maybe he needed to feel big again after being humbled.
