BA names women's U17 world champs squad

Australia qualified for the inaugural U17 world championship by winning the 2009 FIBA Oceania U17 Championship in Brisbane in August.

The 2010 world titles will be held in France from July 16-25, the first time the championship has been held for the U17 age group.

The squad was selected following an Australian Development Camp in September and features the twelve athletes that won the Oceania tournament, including Queenslander Gretel Tippett. Tippett is the only athlete who has experienced basketball on the world stage; she represented Australia at the 2009 FIBA U19 World Championship in Thailand in early August.

Four AIS athletes will be better for their practice going up against some very experienced opponents in the WNBL this season with Adrienne Jones, Alex Bunton, Nadeen Payne and Tayla Roberts suiting up with the team.

Yes all 4 go to SASI -- only 1 in country high performance group. SO agree yes Neil must take some credit for their success. And yes none would be there if they did not play DISTRICT basketball.

Well done to the kids that made the squad from their own hard work. Victoria with 7 representatives. Four from Dandenong, two from Eltham. With network coaches being eltham and dandenong associated - go figure. With 200 kids playing Vic Championship, they can only find kids in their own back yard. And to think theres no politics in basketball???

Basketball is in its infancy across Australia and because of that fact it's a small, incestuous sport built on fathers, mothers, grandparents and uncles etc who run the show, thus selections supports that inbred form of nepotism which will remain until it grows up.
