NBL crowd averages so far

Nabbed these from The West - I assume they're fairly accurate:

Adelaide: 4,715
Perth: 4,097
Townsville: 4,039
Wollongong: 3,410
Cairns: 3,103
Gold Coast: 2,697
Melbourne: 2,645
New Zealand: 2,507

Good start by the Hawks would've helped them. Room for improvement across the board I think, but not the end of the world. Might take a while for the Blaze to recover post-Joyce.

Do you have the capacity of each venue/ Might be interesting to see whether some of the lower numbers are reflective of venue limits

Gold Coast are doing lots right off the court at the moment and hopefully the team keep performing well at home and the crowds build steadily.

The GC United Soccer team is unintentionally helping as well with their obscenely rich owner thumbing his nose at the grass roots fans and treating the team as his own personal plaything (remind us of anyone) Fans are def being turned off the soccer because of his attitude and basketball is looking like a great option for familys wanting a good night out

NZ and Melbourne would be the main ones hamstrung a bit by venue capacity. Given that, Melbourne keep their prices pretty high. I think Perth's figure could be close to capacity. Not sure what Wollongong's is. Adelaide definitely have room to move, but I think the figure is OK considering we're "After Brett" and in an NBL-lite season.

Melbourne's venue location also means that it is difficult and time consuming to make the trip from the Eastern suburb's - basketball's heartland in the Victoria.

Tigers at $30 for a ticket makes me second guess everytime I think about going. (Except for Sixers games of course! ;)

Whereas last seasons Dragons tickets at $19.95 a ticket, never even second guessed going, just went.

There were some stats recorded from last season. Once again, Adelaide is doign well.

2010 2009
ADL 4,715 4,666 49 1%
PER 4,097 4,100 -3 0%
TOW 4,039 4,207 -168 -4%
WOL 3,410 2,533 877 35%
CAI 3,103 3,686 -583 -16%
GCC 2,697 2,700 -3 0%
MEL 2,645 2,497 148 6%
NZS 2,507 3,633 -1,126 -31%

New Zealand with some work to do. Looks like the call to arms in the Steel City has worked.

Given that it was reported that over 5,500 people attended the cairns game, I'm not sure those figures are overly reliable. Most of the upper section and behind the baskets were empty. Given that the lower level also had a few empty seats I can't see how it could have been anywhere near this figure.

Those NZ figures arent worth a pinch of salt, as Ausstadiums only has a few figures, and attendance figures from NSEC for any contest are hard to come by (the Kiwis dont seem to really care like we do)..

Their average this year is just over 3000 I believe from anechdotal reports, which is easily the best start to a season they have had (with the exception of the first year when they had a sell-out first game).

Anon, the reporting method was changed for that game from the regular method to what the NBL favour clubs reporting, AFAIK. Latter method covers tickets that were allocated but not used. This time of year sees a lot of no shows; e.g., at least four of my tickets went unused last week.

Thanks for clarifying that Isaac. It's not really attendance when no shows aren't included though.

Yeah that last 36ers game was pretty dodgy. The ABC said there were only about 3,500 there and they tend to overestimate by about 500. A few people have said there wasn't anything close to the "official" 5,500 so any "official" figures are bogus and can be thrown out. What about the 36ers other home games, are they bogus too?

vs NZ 4,600+
vs Town 4,700+
vs Melb 3,900+
vs Cairns 5,500+ (3,500 at best)

I'd expect another sub 4,000 crowd against the Blaze this weekend too which means it will probably be "officially" close to 6,000.

Not to mention you could account for a sell out every game by handing out 4,000 comps!

AFAIK, that was the first game counted by that method (preferred by the NBL for obvious reasons). Take it up with the league I guess.

I agree with you Isaac. The NBL should be promoting inflated figures, I guess the problems arise (especially when games are televised) when a Club promotes a figure that is clearly well below the attendance. It looks amateur.

I think it should be consistent (if the 36ers always used NBL's method, they would've had 500+ extra each game before this one) and transparent to avoid fans thinking that they're being tricked.

Got told (not by the club or league) that the standard with other major sports is actual attendance - people actually at the venue. Either follow that, or explain what contributes to the actual count used (e.g., paid no-shows).

Have to laugh that several teams' record attendances have exceed their stadium capacity by up to 200.

Isaac - you had 4 tickets left unused? Put em up to the highest bidder or perhaps a giveaway. Best have people go rather than the seats remain empty. I'm thinking of someone with 4 kids who is happy to use the free tickets .....

I always offer them around, but often it's hard to get takers. Problem with random auction/giveaway is that you then have your season membership cards off with a complete stranger. Used to be easier with per-game paper tickets.

I reckon if making tickets $15 meant you would win everyone would do it, what Dwayne did not say is where you get to sit for $15

Yeah, I think 4000 people in the stadium sounded about right. The fact that other clubs have apparently been using this inflated figure of "sales" for some time is interesting - what are the the real attendances for the other clubs is my question, i.e. actual bums on seats?

the blaze figures are definately dodgy, they have struggled to get 2000 a game.

annom, have you been going to games? Didn't realise you were in QLD?

$15 tickets don't guarantee sales. Even freebies barely guarantees that people will show up.
