Tigers Fined by NBL

The National Basketball League (NBL) has fined the Melbourne Tigers club $15,000 and suspended court announcer Wayne Peterson for inappropriate behaviour towards game officials.

The club has been fined $15,000 for McPeake's actions in approaching the scorebench and abusing the game officials as well as making an obscene gesture and abusing the referees in the tunnel after the game.

Peterson has been sanctioned for verbally abusing the match referees whilst acting in the capacity of a scorebench official. He has been suspended for the Tigers’ next two home games and the club has been issued a $500 fine which has been suspended for the rest of the season, pending good behaviour by Peterson.

Melbourne Tigers’ centre Chris Anstey has also received a reprimand from the NBL for inappropriate language towards the referees in the tunnel after the match.

"The actions of these members of the Melbourne Tigers’ organisation quite clearly overstepped the mark and were unacceptable," said Harmison. “We need to send a clear message that we will not tolerate abuse of officials.

“As a league we are very conscious of our obligations as a family sport and it is therefore incumbent upon our teams to display good sportsmanship at all times. We will not accept team officials, players or members of our scorebench crews using obscene language to our referees or making obscene gestures.”

I must say I am 'gobsmacked'. The NBL has finally dealt with the "Fat Controller" and the other loud mouths at the Tigers. McPeake has been doing this for a long time, including, several occassions in Adelaide where he also abused the fans. Now all the NBL and the referees need to do is deal with the boorish actions of the coach and players on the bench during a game.

That fine would be the equivalent of a $1 fine to the rest of us. I don't think it's going to worry them.

It's about time the NBL did this, but unfortunatly it's a case of getting fined if you get reported, during the Taipans game in Adelaide on the 31/10 Mills turned to someone in the crowd behind the away bench and yelled f**k off. He got away with it because no ref heard him.

Fans are a different story than interactions between refs and other match officials. If any fan who has been heckling a player chucks a sad because a player told him to f*** off then he is a vagina. He got away with it because it's a non issue.

I was hoping the NBL would take some actiopn on this...the photo in the Herald-Sun paper on Sunday showed McPeake giving the bird. Not a good image at all!

What a Joke, as if McPeake will pay the fine. Who is gonna enforce it??? The NBL are a rabble at the moment and they have no one with any power to enforce any fine. Was there a hearing or did someone in the NBLoffice just make up the penalties??? No fine or suspension for Anstey because they know they can not enforce anything.

Absolute disgrace.

Powerless League powerless people.

Um, how do you know that they won't enforce the fine or that they will never receive the penalties?

If they don't pay the fine, penalise them points on the NBL table (although they are bottom, so can't go much lower) and do so again next season if the fine is still not paid (with interest).

At the end of the day, the Tigers signed up to this league, they have to play by league rules. The NBL have already shown that they were prepared to stare down the tigers at the beginning of the season, so my bet is that the NBL will win out on this one.

Has McPeake even paid the $10k fine from the finals last year?
I'm glad they got fined again regardless of how much pocket change it is for them, they deserve to be made an example of and be singled out publicly for their repeated boorish behaviour.
Hopefully it will next affect their sponsorships and attendance- maybe then the Tigers organisation will get the message.

I was there and they were shocking even though I did heckle Mcpeake a lot. Announcer though was totally out of line with his comments during the game and defintely deserved what he got.

Maybe McPeake started like Ben Fitz has by running baseline to remonstrate with the refs or approaching scorebench to question calls.

Let it be a lesson to Ben to curb his behaviour now
