u/20 national championships teams and previews

With only a week to go until the start of the nationals. I thought that i might update all the teams and then preview each team over the next few days.

This is only for the womens, as i really dont know a huge amount about the mens comp.

NSW
Jaimee Cohen - second year, played last year average of 20 mins a game for 3.3 points, 1.7 asssists and 6.5 rebounds
Elise Pitcher - played for the 2008 u/18 NSW metro team, but was not selected for the 2009 u/20 team. A good defensive player.
Ellie Gleeson - second year, average of 25mins last year for 5.5, 1.5, 1.8. High score of 11.
Carly Boag - First time in a state team since 2007.
Danielle Daoud - Second year players, averages 12 minutes last year for 1.3, 2, 1.7.
Allyson Brown - first year player who averages 14 points and 8 rebounds at last years u/18 nationals
Ashleigh Karaitiana - First year player. Averages of 14.6, 3.6, 5.6 at last years u/18 nationals
Hayley Lepaio - First year player, averages of 5.6, 1, 5.9 in u/18 last year
Emma Mahady - first year, averages of 13, 2, 6 in u/18 last year
Paige Melville - first year, averages of 9.4, 2.6, 2.4 in u/18 2009

The NSW team seems to be a little bit inexperienced at u/20 level with only 3 players returning from last years tournament however they do seem to have a few minutes between them. A good balanced team overall, and everyone will have to play extremely well for them to have a realistic chance.
Predicted finish 4th

Part 2 - New Zealand later tonight

NSW boys by a mile.

Tassie boys may make the second round with all of the prep JS has put them through. Draw suits them.

New Zealand

Because this is the first year a NZ team is in the competition, detailed stats about the players are hard to find. There are 3 players who have never played at state level. The players to watch out for and who will need to perform are Jelena Vucinic, Zoe Kensington, Samara Gallaher. Height will be a major weakness in this team and any team with height should be able to dominated the boards.

Ashleigh Poto
Bella Mccallum
Adoniah Lewis
Courtney Hamblin
Nadia Anderson
Freya Newton
Hannah Mackay
Jelena Vucinic
Zoe Kensington
Samara Gallaher

With Under 19 world's now why do they persist with an U20 Nationals that struggles to get kids to even try out and is a hit out for the AIS group by and large. BA would be better funding another underage tournament than this shocker.

why do the U20 vic boys have a physio and the U20 girls dont, yet they have 4 coaches going?

Hardly a "hitout" for the AIS crew considering at least half of them are too young for 20's.

Means nothing if they are at the AIS most of the players in the state teams picked could easily be at the AIS.

179, if they aren't in the AIS now they never will be because the 20's is not a selection tool for it as they are too old which is why I question the worth of the tournament. I don't know about other states but S A selections for women doesn't draw a crowd or interest and if you look at the number of second year 18's girls left in SASI, it's doubtful they'll get a team next year.
And on the AIS with their dreadful performances in the WNBL they'd be better making sure they get the right cattle than playing in a tournament like 20's.

what i have seen the boys have a great team (if they play as a team) and should do very well, just rember a good team will always beat a group of individual players..

Most 20 teams do not ever get the team together until the champs. Pretty std around the Country.
I read Qld men will not be all together till this week!!!!!

SA Mens team are pretty decent, they are going to surprise!!

Of course Cambage isn't going. Neither is Jarry. What would you choose; win a meaningless junior National championship (of which both of them already own 4 or 5) or play in the important semi final against Sydney in the hopes of a home grand final.

Exactly Astor - Why would Cambage and Jarry throw away a chance for a WNBL premiership?

Just goes to show how much depth the VIC's have though as they would still arguably be favourites even without them both...

Vic women held out nsw women by 3, great game. SA women dismantled Tas by about 80 or so, and WA women held out QLD by a couple.

Great to see the tiger lass doing well. Condsidering the 18 Div 1 coach put her in the "lazy" catagory only good enough for Div 2 initially.

Good to see talent still rises and shines over average coaching.

Well done to her and the team, quite an effort

Qld boys are a lock for the boys title in the 20's.
Hill is the best big kid and Chitham the best athlete.

Vics will lock up cadee and make the final but won't have the bigs to go with QLD.

SA will win the girls and Vic will be runner up. Vic coaching is a mess and guards are only just. Bigs look slow.

So QLD for boys SA for girls

Um, Queensland play Victoria and SA play New South Wales. Your scenarios are not possible. SA to beat NSW, Qld to beat Vic and then SA to win the final.

How could they be out coached - the talk was that their coach had top credentials over other candidates that applied for the position.

Should they have employed a coach with knowledge of the age group and not for so called credentials.

I watched the Girls Grand Final it was a great win for us but I was embarrassed for the Vic Girls who gave their all but purely the coach could not match ours. Seemed to run with the same plays as the other game we beat them?

I also watched the U20 Girls grand final and agree with Anon comments. The quality and effort of the Vic girls was extremely competitive in comparison to SA, the difference was the Vic coaching staff ... e.g. VIC coach ran exactly the same stuff in the GF as when they got beaten in Rnd 4 by 19 by SA, and it was obvious that wasn't going to get it done! The better coached team won the game, and they deserved it.... just don't bag the ability of the Vic girls! VJBL have a lot to answer for in the coaching selection and allowing a parent to coach a State team ......
