Commonwealth Bank, Groves in a stoush over Dome

THE Commonwealth Bank is suing former ABC Learning Centres boss Eddy Groves for $5.6 million, and wants to take possession of the home of the Adelaide 36ers basketball club - Distinctive Homes Dome.

Mr Groves, who faces the Federal Court in Sydney this week for a public examination into ABC Learning Centres' collapse, has argued the bank has no claim to the mortgage over the Dome.

It is understood a mortgage on the property may be held by a relative of Mr Groves, leaving the bank in a difficult position.

Not good at all, what does everone else think?
The dome is the home of basketball and available to the 36ers at all times but after attending the Adelaide ent cent open day last month it got me thinking it wouldnt be a bad venue for the 36ers to play at due to its inner city location.
The only thing as ive written in previous posts about the dome is it has superior seating in the lower section compared to the AEC.

Biggest problem moving to the Entertainment Centre would be availability of dates as basketball would have to fit in with all the other events booked to be there. However the original drawbacks of parking and catering concessions may not be an issue now as the Dome is no longer owned by Basketball (I am sure someone can advise on this).

Other issue would be venue hire cost and with a crowd of 4-5000, there would be a lot of empty space. However, just imagine if the 36ers have a stellar season and host a home grand final with 10000+ supporters. Training would also be an issue as the court at the Entertainment centre would not be left in place just for the 36ers.

How do other cities use their respective "Entertainment Centres" for basketball then?

Simply, they don't use the large Entertainment Centres. There has been no team in Brisbane for a few yars, and the Sydney Kings have also been missing for a few years, the Melbourne team/s have been playing in small secondary venues instead of the Tennis Centre, Perth has been in a small venue as well so the previous conflicts in scheduling in the later 1990's and early 2000's have not occured.

Concerts and all the other types of entertainment are often booked 12 - 18 months in advance and sometimes take up a block of dates over weekends as it is not only the actual performance, but the setting up and dismantling of the sets, etc. Therefore it is possible to go weeks without a suitable date being available.

The NBL program is usually only released a few months before a season, so they have to juggle dates arounf venue availability and this usually is the cause of some teams playing each other only weeks apart.

This is actually fairly old news, the dome was actually being controlled by administrators for Commonwealth bank for the last two games of last season. Eddie managed to wrangle control back a few weeks ago, and now Commonwealth are making another run at it.

Most teams also don't have the luxury of training on the court they play at and will train at a local basketball club (ABA side etc)/stadium/shed.

The Sixers have the best facilities of all the NBL teams. They can train and play at the same venue and the weights room is pretty high quality.

The Lightning the same.

Would be a shame if they had to move

Offices, players lockers and the like at the Dome, also.
I imagine we can't prejudice this weeks court case by predicting the outcome.

The Dome must stay and remain where it is.

I love the fact we have a purpose built basketball stadium that the players can train and play in. It's the best in the league and draws the most fans.

It would be digusting to see the games shifted to the Entertainment Centre and ensuring we'd fit their schedules.

Save the Dome.

Jack, No weights room at the dome anymore, the boys do their weights training at Woodville/West Torrens Footy club as of last season.
