Almost did it 10+ years ago before plans changed. At that point, a lot of the arrangements were being looked at by a prospective employer. Not sure what the options are if you don't have work lined up though. I imagine the job market over there is pretty rough right now.

Dont really have a set place, but one of the bigger cities like LA or NYC.

Yeah i have looked at the job market over there. and without being over there it makes it extremely difficult.

anyone else have any tips or advice

Have you looked into visas in any details? Pretty sure you can't just rock up and live there unless you're bringing something to the table in terms of specialist skills or similar, I don't believe they have a working holiday thing like the UK and Canada and others so it's harder to get your foot in the door.

Looking into eligibility is your first step before even entertaining thoughts about anything else.

Nah i havent looked into any visa details yet. i thought there was a working holiday visa for over there. i will have a bit of a look later on.

I've been thinking that maybe a holiday first to see what available over there and then going from there

Yeah, you'd definitely want to check the place out before you move over there. Not sure what your position is, or how old you are or whether or not you like kids but I worked at a summer camp for 3 months in the States back in '98 and found it was a great way to get a taste for the country, could be worth considering.

Camp America and Camp Usa are the summer camp programs. Camp America looked after me pretty well.

They cannot help you live in the usa though you get a 3 month visa with the terms if you leave your employment you are immediately deported. Basically you work at a summer camp for the summer then get 3 weeks to travel the USA. You also do not get to chose which summer camp or which location you go to, the camps chose you.

If you want to move to the USA you need a company to sponsor you. Then they have to prove that your able to perform a job that a current American citizen is unable to do. I was sponsored by a company for 18months on a training visa because I had a trade, and taught outdoor education, was the only way they could keep me there for so long.
Unless you marry in this time, your out when your visa runs out..and even if you marry a friend of mine was still going through the process 7 years later.

Your best bet is to goto mexico, and cross the border without being caught, you get more rights that way lol.

My brother currently lives in Brooklyn, he went over as a tourist (no visa required - Australian's get a 3 month holiday visa) then began working cash in hand which is easy to do he suggests and once his 3 months were up he went to the UK briefly and then returned for another 3 months. He's done this a number of times now and if you want a back door in this could be it?
