Eastern upset fancied Eagles

The Mavericks last night built a first quarter lead and then held on, winning every quarter on route to a 114-89 win at home.

It was an all-round performance from the underdogs, Becis with 23 and 5 assists, Davis with 22, 7 and 5, and Bungy with 19.

Dix came good for the Eagles for the second game straight, knocking in 31 and adding 8 rebounds and 9 assists for a likely POTW performance. The much anticipated arrival of Newley was less successful, as he shot 6 of 25 for 17 points and 9 rebounds, but 7 turnovers.

The result is likely to hurt a lot of tipsters!

Don't know if Motteram would have made a win/loss difference. The Mavs were too strong last night. They played like the championship team that they were last year even though they have lost Holmes. Newley's performance was disappointing. May have been teething problems which will correct itself as the season goes on, but you would think that a player of his calibre would not have been so badly affected. With much expectation on him going into this game, its difficult to tell if Motteram would have been much better.

Mottram and Sutton sat on the end of the bench.

Newley was very rusty, though if he pulled down that two-handed dunk over the top of Trebilcock I think even the Eastern 'diehards' would have cheered. Becis by far won their duel, I thought he was the game MVP.

The other 'highlight' was the Trebilcock backscreen on an unsighted Tim Smyth, who stayed down for abit...but sprung into life after that and scored 10 points.

Bungey was everywhere too, but still very angry!
