Australia bid for the 2014 World Champs for Women

Basketball Australia are making a bid for victoria to host the 2014 World Championships for women, providing an opportunity for Australian superstars such as Lauren Jackson and Penny Taylor to play their international swan songs at home.

Herald-Sun article: http://linky.com.au/px7px

From the article:

"A successful bid would make Victoria the exclusive tournament host, with Melbourne as the main site and probably supported by Geelong, Ballarat and Bendigo after those three cities' basketball facilities were upgraded for the 2006 Commonwealth Games."

This is fantastic news after Australia last hosted the WC's for women back in 1994. Very positve step by BA and Basketball Victoria.

However an even bigger move would be to see BA go after the WC's for men. This would provide a far greater overall boost for basketball in Australia and a gale force wind that the NBL could use to power further ahead and help regain the impetus on the local landscape it once had in the late 80's and early 90's.

What are your thoughts?

Disgusting.

This should be a Australia wide event as was Oz94

BA should not support a bid where all games will be played in one state.

I suppose Anon that depends whether you want the event here or not.

a) Vic major events will not support if held in all states
b) other state major events corps other than NSW are unlikley to have the cash to back it
c) federal government support is most unlikley

The way the other staes get involved is hosting pre-event tournaments at best.

LC - BA looked at the men's for 2010, it was considered at the time to be prohibitively expensive to underwrite.
