World Champs: Day 2 Recap
Some big games on day 2...a lot of close ones including the double-overtime German thriller over Serbia, Australia's 2 point loss to Argentina, the Greek's escaped against Puerto Rico, Lithuania overcame Canada, whilst host Turkey proved too strong down the stretch for Russia.
Group A
- Angola defeated Jordan, 79-65
ANG: Lutonda 16, Morais 14, Gomes 13, Almeida 11
JOR: Wright 18, Abbaas 14
Jordan had their moments, but Angola's full court pressure in the last quarter ensured they got the result they wanted.
- Germany defeated Serbia, 82-81 in 2OT
GER: Jagla 22, Greene 15, Schaffartzik 14, McNaughton 12, Hamann 10
SRB: Perovic 20, Rasic 15, Tepic 14, Velickovic 11
Game of the tournament so far! Radic made two straight three's in the final seconds to send the game into OT, and tight 1st OT followed, and in the 2nd OT, the German defense prevailed.
- Argentina defeated Australia, 74-72
ARG: Scola 31, Gutierrez 17
AUS: Ingles 22, Mills 21, Nielsen 10
Australia had their chances after leading by 10 in the 3rd, but Argentina's experience and poise shone through down the stretch.
Group B
- USA defeated Slovenia, 99-77
USA: Durant 22, Gay 16, Iguodala & Westbrook 11, Love 10
SLO: Nachbar 13, Vidmar 10
USA's defence, rebounding and fast breaks killed off any potential Slovenian chances.
- Croatia defeated Iran, 75-54
CRO: Ukic & Bogdanovic 13, Tomic 12
IRN: Haddadi 27, Kazemi 10
Croatia had far too many options for an outmatched Iranian team.
- Brazil defeated Tunisia, 80-65
BRA: Barbosa 21, Splitter 16, Machado 13, Garcia 10
TUN: Kechrid 15, Slimane 14, Mejri 10
An improved performance by Tunisia was never going to be enough against a talented Brazilian team.
Group C
- China defeated Cote d'Ivoire, 83-73
CHN: Yi 26, S Wang 25, Liu 12
CIV: Diabate 20, Konate 11
China continued to ride Yi's good form but still struggled to overcome the Ivory Coast.
- Greece defeated Puerto Rico, 83-80
GRE: Spanoulis 28, Tsartsaris 14, Bourousis & Diamantidis 12
PUR: Barea 20, Ramos 16, Sanchez 13, Vassallo 11
Spanoulis hit 14 of his game-high 28 in the last quarter to avoid a Greek upset, still without stars Fotsis and big Sofo.
- Turkey defeated Russia, 65-56
TUR: Turkoglu 14, Ilyasolva & Asik 10
RUS: Kaun & Monya 13, Bykov 10
In front of their home fans, Turkey prevailed in a defensive struggle.
Group D
- Lithuania defeated Canada, 70-68
LTU: Kleiza 18, Pocius & Delininkaitis 11
CAN: Anderson 15, Anthony 12, Brown 11
Lithuania had trouble with Canada's trapping defence, and Canada nearly pulled off a huge win but their shot at the buzzer rimmed out.
- France defeated Lebanon, 86-59
FRA: Gelabale 18, Koffi 17, Mahinmi & De Colo 14
LEB: Vroman 19, El Khatib 12, Freije 11
Lebanon were brought back down to earth by a clinical demonstration by the French who needed to win to prove their victory over Spain was not fluke.
- Spain defeated New Zealand, 101-84
ESP: Gasol 22, Navarro 18, Garbajosa 14, Fernandez 12, Reyes 10
NZL: Penney 21, Abercrombie 19, Jones 15
Spain bounced back from their loss with a commanding offensive display against the plucky Kiwi's. the Spanish stars came out to play and filled up the stats sheet.
