Australian "NBA Watch" - 2010/11 Season

The 2010/11 NBA season is now upon us, and I thought it was appropriate to start up the now regular thread that follows the Aussies in the NBA.

This season we have 3 Australian's plying their trade in the NBA, including:

Andrew Bogut | Milwaukee Bucks
David Andersen | Toronto Raptors
Patty Mills | Portland Trailblazers

Bogut is returning after a season-ending injury, Andersen has moved across to Toronto from the Rockets, whilst Mills just managed to secure the final roster spot with Portland.

Please post all game results, news and comments regarding the Aussies in this thread.

David Andersen will play as a back up for Bargnani. and may get more minutes than planned if Bargnani will not improve his help D. seems will be a break out year for Andersen?

Not sure if it will be a breakout year but I think he can solidify his position as a bench contributor. He put up a nice offensive game against New York last week (including some fancy footwork to make his own shot against Stoudemire).

Yeah, Andersen should get a decent crack this year as a backup and could even start if Bargnani doesn't pull his finger out! Its amazing really, because Bargnani is significantly more athletic than Andersen, yet watching them recently, Andersen looks the better player!

Toronto are going to be one of the worst teams in the NBA this season. This bodes well for Andersen as he should get some decent junk minutes (even some non-junk mins) and put up some more decent numbers (i don't think he'll be getting $8 ~ $10 million extensions, but maybe a little more than min salary).

I hope Patty Mills gets a run in Portland, although it seems like there's at least 2 players in front of him.

The NBA finally gets underway today, with the outside chance that Patty Mills may see some action for Portland in their game against Phoenix. However Mills is the Blazers "last string" point guard at this stage, and his best chance of seeing action could be due to an injury or the game becoming a rout.

Toronto won't be a very good team at all this year I'm afraid, however Andersen will get plenty of chances to show what he can do in the NBA. As Beantown suggested, Bargnani has not had a very good pre-season at all, and Andersen has started at least 1 game and has been very productive in coming off the bench for around 20 17-20 minutes per game to date.

The Bucks lost to the Hornets 91-95 and certainly had their chances to win. Andrew Bogut continues to receive more minutes and he delivered 15 points on 6/12 shooting (0/1 3PT, 3/10 FT) to go with 15 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 block and 1 turnover in 36 minutes. His team was far better with him on the court, however his missed FT's in the last quarter hurt their chances of securing a win.

The Raptors lost a winnable game to the Knicks, 93-98. David Andersen came off the bench for just 13 minutes but provided instant offence. He scored 8 points on 3/6 shooting (1/1 3PT, 1/1 FT) to go with 5 rebounds and no turnovers.

The Trailblazers defeated the Clippers 98-88 but Patty Mills once again did not see any action despite being on the 12-man roster.

None of the Aussies' teams are playing today.

The Bucks finally gained a win in overcoming the Hornets, 98-88. Andrew Bogut started and scored 14 points on 6/13 shooting (2/2 FT) to go with 8 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal, 4 blocks and 2 turnovers in playing 35 minutes.

This from ESPN's Marc Stein:

"The Blazers haven't always been willing to surrender Bayless, but they apparently had to make sure they had roster room to keep guard Patty Mills. Reason being: Word is Blazers owner Paul Allen is a h-u-g-e Mills fan and was determined to see him stay."

The Bucks lost a heartbreaker to the Celtics 102-105 in overtime. He also had 13 rebounds, 1 block and just 1 turnover in playing a monster 48 minutes.

Toronto got worked over by Utah, going down 108-125 in a high-scoring affair. David Andersen came off the bench to scored just 2 points on 0/1 shooting but nailing 2/2 from the line. He also had 3 rebounds, 1 block and 1 turnover in just 12 minutes of action.

They had lost six straight until today. Without Oden (or even a healthy Priz) and only a half fit Roy they look very suspect. I also think that they have over rated Batum - he is solid at best. IMO they are missing Webster and/or Outlaw more than they expected.

I think a first round loss is best case scenario for the Blazers at this stage.

Hornets lost to the Knicks 92-100. Andersen did not play - coaches decision.

Bogut was back in the line-up and he delivered with a double-double 31 point outburst on 13/20 shooting but a woeful 5/16 from the line, as the Magic resorted to "hack a Bogut" tactics in the dying minutes. He also had a huge 18 rebounds, 1 assist, 2 steals, 2 blocks and just 2 turnovers in playing 39 minutes (way to ease the big fella back into the rotation after a week off with back problems!).

Damn Big Sexy, you sure were quick with that one! I reckon Brandon Roy's current form will prevent Nate McMillan, even with his Brandon Roy man-love affair, from playing Roy at the point. Armon Johnson seems to be in the dog house. What other possibilities are there? Mills must start and play a good 20 to 30 minutes.

Great stuff, let's hope this continues.

While I am not sure about Gaze's comments on Sunday that we may need CJ Bruton for the London Olympics (he could probably still do it but we have to give younger players a chance now) they did very much highlight how badly we need Mills to develop as a point guard rather than just a scorer.

Whilst I have the utmost respect for CJ and was spewing that he made himself unavailable for the WC's, I just can't see how after pulling out this year due to not feeling physically up to the task that he would all of a sudden come good two years later at the age of 37. Of course, it would help if he chose to rest during the NBL offseason in the lead up to the Olympics rather than play in Puerto Rico but having chosen to do that in 2010, I don't see why he wouldn't make that same call in 2012. All power to him.
It also seems a little disrespectful to Martin and Gibson who are already good players and will be two years stronger and more experienced in 2012. That's not to mention players such as Dellavedova, Cadee and Greenwood, amongst others. Who knows how good they could be in two years. The need for a combo guard like CJ may also be alleviated by the rise of someone like Anatoly Bose who could well be in the NBA by the time London comes around.

I tend to agree with you AB4EVA. I still don;pt think it is black and white though as CJ may still have some value depending on who ends up bveing fit, available and in form come 2012. But I do think the time has come to move on and look to place some faith in our future. Patty does need to continue to develop as a true pass-first point guard and things are looking up on that front so far. And I think in Martin and Gibson, plus with the other youngsters trying to push through, we have a good solid base to work with. Delly's scoring is down a bit this season, but his assists are well up on the plus side.

Yesterday's results:

Bucks defeated the Pacers on a last second tip-in by Andrew Bogut, winning 97-95. Bogut had a double-double to half time and end with 17 points (5/14 shooting (7/10 FT) to go with 11 rebounds, 1 assist, 2 steals, 5 blocks and 2 turnovers in 38 minutes. The big fella is rock solid, especially at the defensive end. Get on board and voter for him to play in the NBA Allstar game!

Hornets beat the Pistons 93-74. David Andersen came off the bench and scored 3 points on ¼ shooting (1/1 3PT) to go with 4 rebounds, 2 assists and 1 turnover in 14 minutes. Good to see Andersen starting to get some burn with his new team.

I can't really see a good justification for CJ being picked for London, and it was probably just a throwaway line from Gaze given how well he played against Sydney. You would hope at least one of Mills, Martin, Gibson or Markovic will have improved enough to be a starting international pg by 2012, and if Mills keeps getting minutes and producing it will certainly be him. The only way we could need CJ is if we lose to NZ next year and feel we need a veteran presence to qualify through the pre-Olympic tournament.

As for Dellavedova, Cadee and Greenwood, it’s best to wait and see with those guys, there is no guarantee they will ever be good international players. Yes they all have excellent talent, but many top junior players have failed to progress or progressed no further than being solid pros.

Can’t wait to watch Mills play tonight, hopefully he has another good one.

I agree with LC - Hoopsters should get behind Bogut and make an effort to vote him in to the all-star game. It would be good to be able to record somewhere on Hoops the number of votes people have cast for Bogut (and Mills and Andersen!).

Bogut deserves a spot on his play this year, and following on from his breakout season last year where he earned All-NBA 3rd Team honours.

Interesting to see in the box score that Armon Johnson got 3:33 minutes and in that time managed to jack up 8 shots, making 3, for 6 points and pulling down 3 boards. Probably in junk time at the end, but seems he's getting a little toey sitting behind Mills in the rotation.

Got to feel for Andersen, Hawks held his rights for years without bringing him over. Gets burn for Houston and plays very well IMO. Now he is getting no time for the Hornets. Unlucky man.

He can take Kurt Thomas spot at the Bulls any day and I would be happy!

Watched the Bucks/Blazers game and was quite impressed with what Patty brought the the game.

He has a few issues with turnovers at the moment, sometimes he gets into the lane quickly only to not have an open passing lane. His FG% is not fantastic either.

However, he does do a good job of drawing defense toward the lane and then dishing to an open jump shooter. When he does have an open passing lane he is able to make very quick passes to cutters.

ESPN's Awards watch has Andrew Bogut in 3rd place behind Kevin Garnett and Dwight Howard for the Defensive Player of the Year Award.

"3. Andrew Bogut, Bucks: He's missed six of Milwaukee's 26 games, and the Bucks are well below .500 as a team, but Bogut continues to bring the thunder from Down Under. He leads the league in blocks per game (2.85) and ranks sixth in boards (11.5 per game). He recently had a 10-game streak of collecting two blocks or more snapped."

From the article:

..lost amid another Blazers fourth-quarter implosion and the traveling sideshow that is the Miami Heat was this tidbit:

For the fourth time in the last five games, Patty Mills played virtually the entire fourth quarter as Blazers coach Nate McMillan continued a trend of playing his improving high-energy second-year point guard over the established veteran Andre Miller.

From today's Herald-Sun on Andrew Bogut:

Andrew Bogut will put his troublesome right elbow under the knife as soon as the season finishes after watching his shooting percentage slip from 58 per cent two years ago to just 48 per cent this season.

Bogut dislocated the elbow last year, ending his season and forcing him out of the world basketball championships in Turkey.

The 26-year-old will have the surgery and then fly back to Australia to work on his shot over summer.

Watched the Bucks v Celts on One, the Bucks were atrocious. 56 was the lowest score the Celtics had ever held an opponent to, and that is saying something.

Bogut surprised me with how timid and lacking in confidence he is. Looked like he wouldn't know a post move if he saw one. Was continually passing back out from the post to give last second prayers to his teammates, who couldn't hit a 747. Looked a shadow of the player I watched quite a lot last year, I hope it was just a one-off poor performance.

A season that the Bucks just let get away. Such a disappointment after such a promising year last year.

Agree with you XY.

Andrew Bogut was this morning interviewed by Andrew Gaze, Tim Watson and Dermie on Melbourne's SEN radio.

Amongst the discussion, Bogut stated his arm is still giving im considerable grief, including some days where he has no feeling at all in his right-hand. He confirmed he will be having another operation as soon as the season ends to hopefully fix his remaining arm/elbow issues once and for all.

They also discussed the up and down NBA season, with Bogut tipping a healthy Celtics or Lakers team to go all the way. He predicted the Heat to lose to Celtics in 2nd round of playoffs.

They discussed the possibility of the NBA lockout whcih Bogut stated he felt would go ahead due to what he claimed were ridiculous requests for changes by the NBA and team owners, including one that asks to void all existing NA guaranteed contracts and start afresh!

They also chatted about sports people and theur remuneration given the very slim pickings for most of Australia's swimmers. Bogut stated he would happily reimburse his AIS grant but asked what happens to the guys that also went their that did not "work their butt off like him" and didn't make it to the same level and hence the same kind of earnings?

Well, the season is over now Bogey, go get your operation.

No point risking a further injury by playing the season out and delaying your recovery from the second operation.

The lock out story is really going to make things interesting over the next few months.

Well, he did have one shot, a sweet drive into the lane through traffic which was certain to go in but I think it was Chris Johnson from memory who touched it in the cylinder and it was disallowed for offensive interference. Spewin'

Hornets lost to the Grizzlies 89-111.
Andersen again did not play and was not on the 12-man roster.

So what happens with Andersen next season? Will the Hornets retain him, or will Ando get a gig somewhere else in the NBA or is he likely to head back to Europe for significantly bigger dollars and a starting berth on a Euroleague contender?

Tomorrow:

- Bucks vs Raptors (Bogut not playing)
- Hornets vs Jazz (will Andersen get a chance to play?)

I doubt unfortunately that Anderson will get another gig in the NBA. The move to the NBA has been a massive backwards step for him. He should go back Europe where the minutes and the $$ are waiting for him in leagues which suit his game so much better.

Bogut has surgery (NBA.com)

Bogut has surgey (FIBA.com)

From FIBA.com:

The surgery - which many expected to coincide with the end of Milwaukee's season - threatens to compromise his participation in this summer's key FIBA Oceania Championship, to be held in Australia from 7 to 11 September.

With the Bucks having missed out on a playoff spot, Australian fans can at least have some hope that the operation has come earlier enough for the Bommers' star to recover in time for the three game series with New Zealand, that sees the winner automatically qualify for London.
