Another basketballer lost to AFL

Yet another promising basketballer has been snapped up by an AFL team, this time it is Ryan Bathie who played for Melbourne Tigers. Geelong has snapped him up and put him on their list.

Wells said he looked forward to seeing Bathie who led the scoring for his Nicholls State Uni team in the 2007/08 and 2008/09 seasons and left as its ninth all-time greatest scorer develop in the VFL next year. "He's only played football at school, but it's really important to point out that he's not taking the position of a footballer on the list, he's actually outside the list," he said.

"We hope that over the course of summer training he'll improve in all the areas he needs to, both physically and with his football ability and knowledge, and play a role in our VFL."

He played a year or 2 ago X. Dev player for the Tigers. Had him on my dream team. 7 games for 26 minutes.

Had a good college stint though.

Was a long way off the speed of the NBL. Would have had to work very, very hard to make it.

"The Cats have signed 23-year-old Ryan Bathie under a rule that allows them to list players on a supplementary list who haven't played football in the past three years."

Basically a rule designed by the AFL as an incentive to poach from other sports. They can be rookied without having to enter the draft.

I doubt he'll play anything but VFL next year but he could be elevated if they wanted.

Tom Lynch is another one this year who could easily have played pro basketball. Will go between 7-12 in the draft.

Unless they were ever going to play for the Boomers don't worry about them leaving the game.

AFL teams should arrange training sessions for elite basketballers. These guys could go out as a group and not be 'intimidated' by current footy players, or feel uncomfortable. There is a lot of talent there for prospective footballers. Believe SA have a few budding bballers/fballers??

Bthie wasn't a decent NBL player, nor was he ever going to be considered a boomer.

Geelong and most other clubs have players come in for individual or small group sessions all the time.

Geelong have had most of the Supercats down there at one stage or another, 99.9% of them don't make it, it's not as easy as many seem to think!
