Gary Ervin named NBL MVP

Tough field this year with two of the leading candidates likely losing votes to teammates, but a great and entertaining winner in Gary Ervin.

119 votes to the big Kazoo's 118 votes. Closest margin in the history of history. Third was Ballinger (!) and Corey Williams on 75.

Couldn't believe Kazoo didn't win until I saw the margin. Probably a just and fair result.

A likeable winner this year nevertheless.

Khazzouh being on an unsuccessful team did him no favours.

Yes, the current system doesnt really work that well as players from both sides get votes (usually in similar proportions), regardless of whether the game was one-sided or not.

A bit of sulking from Marc Hinton in Stuff.co.nz. One second he's ripping the Breakers, the next he's claiming hardluck because only Braswell won an award.

What a silly article. Gleeson although not my favourite coach was a better option purely because he didnt have the roster the Breakers have PURCHASED. You lose your MVP from the season before and still finish 2nd? Thats tough IMO. Probably didnt help that anyone with genuine knowledge of the game doesnt really rate Lemanis as a tactical genius.

He had 2 players in the All Nbl First team, and the best 6th man. NZ needs to start realising Kirk Penney's urine doesnt taste like wine in AUS, so when his team stop performing for 5-8 games after 1st is locked up, people outside of NZ will jump off that bandwagon of him winning MVP.

More than anything, Penney's MVP situation came down to the fact that he was losing votes to Wilkinson, plus a few to the others. He also missed five games.

Wilkinson scored 20 or more points nine times. Bruton did it four times. Braswell and Abercrombie did it another four times between them.

How many times did that happen to Ervin? Sav hit 20 once, Coenraad twice, Davidson had 3-4 big double-doubles, Forman hit 20 or more five times.

How many times did that happen to Ballinger, for example? DeVries had 20 once, Shannon had one game of 23 - that's it. Johnson had a couple when Balls was out and Carter another.

(Not saying 20+ is going to get you votes, just using it as a quick method to make a point.)

Turns out Balls only had four games of 20 or more, but a lot in the high teens when he would've been top scorer.

---

D Martin was a worthy DPOTY and Madgen ROTY. If MVP was calculated differently, then the Breakers might have an argument for Penney.

As for COTY, it's voted by peers and I think a lot of people would look at potential. Crocs weren't widely pitched as top two material (though Boti rated them and their imports especially) while it's nearly always been the Breakers' championship to lose.

Fizzle the Breakers PURCHASED their team?
Funny that Henare has always been there, Abercrombie, Webster, Pledger were development players, Vukona and Boucher previously played for the club, Penney is a Kiwi and was never gonna play for anyone else in this league. So they bought CJ and 2 Imports. This stuff gets real old, they have been adding "local" pieces to this team for the past few years and have chopped and changed Imports like every other team in the league. When the Breakers develop a player they then give him a chance to contribute to the team instead of letting another team sign them and reap the benefits.
Haters gonna Hate

It's no longer the most valuable player it's the player who has the greater distance between their stats and the rest of the team's stats.

Last time I checked, MVP went to the player that had the most impact on their team.

Despite Penney's obvious skill, he is just a pure scorer. With the amount of talent on the team and the sheer scoring power they have, I don't think the team would have faltered much had he made the NBA.

As already stated, when half your team can produce good numbers and produce impacts both offensively and defensively, it's obvious why he didn't get so many votes.

Think the voting went the right way. If Penney wants an MVP on a team the caliber that the Breakers are at; he needs to become the 25-30ppg man he's capable of be the main man again.
