State Champ Results

Looking through the results indicates that junior basketball in this state is not in a healthy postion when one club is so dominate. Well done to sturt.

However to have a vibrant and growing junior comp there needs to be an even spread on clubs winning in the state champs.

If the junior comp was more even , then teams would be getting hard pressure games each week thus improving the standard of all players.
Ultimately this will flow onto better performance at national state championships.

Teams getting thrashed each week will eventually turn kids away from playing basketball to play other sports.

Simialr problem is happening in the AFL. A young lad has the opportunity to play for collingwood or north melbourne. With the money and resources that collingwood can put forward, the choice will be collingwood. Yet without the smaller clubs being competitive and unable to attract members, what would happen to the competition.

Similar situtation is unfolding with junior basketball.

One competition doesnt make a championship - full congratulations to STURT ON JOB WELL DONE.
but BASKETBALL NEEDS A COMPLETE REVIEW - HAVING ONE CLUB SO DOMINATE IS NOT HEALTHY FOR THE SPORT

some clubs didnt even field teams in some grades other clubs cant win a game in any divisions
in local competition
Clubs need to look at a moratorium with BSA leading the way to get a better more even stronger competition - maybe good placer to start would be for clubs to model themselves on Sturt

Sturt DO have refs on their side for most of the game - how do you justify 8 fouls to sturt vs 26 for another team - this happens all the time and has even been commented on by sturt parents. We should ALL go over to sturt - get a grip refs and start making fairer calls. Very frustrating watching this time after time. All one way!!!

Clubs need to get more actively involved in junior recruiting so that they can have a broader selection for teams. Southern have done this well and now have enough u14 boys for 6 or 7 teams, and funnily enough were competitive and only lost to sturt who are an amazingly good team. What do clubs actually do to recruit? What promotional tools do they use to attract new families into their club?

Clubs need to stop going to BSA palms up with tears in the eyes telling sob stories and crying poor, and actually activley develop and recruit juniors from there local programs. St Clair runs an extensive miniball program yet local clubs struggle for junior numbers.

It all starts from Aussie Hoops level, which clubs run, to develop pathways for juniors. More kids = harder selection, and not just placing kids into div1 to make up the numbers. It is a similar reason as to why there are some subpar referees, because that is all they have.

Well done to Sturt for their results on the weekend. From the u14/u16 boys games I saw there was integrity, honesty, skill and respect to burn from these kids and their coaches.

But sadly a few Sturt parents let their club down badly. The harassment of a female scorer from an opposing club by (who I assume) was a Sturt parent during an 16B (reserve) game on a Sunday morning final at Pasadena was outrageous. Thankfully an official from Sturt stepped in to calm the situation. Well done to you, Sir.

BSA need to change the rules about team nominations.

Why should Woodville have a Div 2 any time they want team just because they have a CABL team.

The Forestville Div 3-4 team beat the Woodville 2s 68-17.

Its amazing how quickly some teams can fall right on their heads. Injurys and competing with club football dont help im sure, but some results were very surprising.
One thing that upset me over the weekend- heard of some betting going on between umpires as to the result of games... does anyone else think this is unprofessional?
As much as everyone is complaining about sturt getting some favourable calls, they do have some excellent players too. I know thats why i hate going up against them, not just because of the refs.

Here are the points for the weekend. Reserves may be a little off as we are not aware which teams clubs nominated for points.

State Boys

Sturt 17
Norwood 8
West 5
Forestville 5
Woodville 3
Southern 3
Eastern 3

State Girls

Sturt 11
Eastern 10
Forestville 9
Norwood 7
West 4
South 1
Centrals 1

Overall State Champion Club

Sturt 28
Norwood 15
Forestville 14
Eastern 13
West 9
Southern 5
Centrals 1

As most people were saying the girls trophy was very close. Overall Sturt still very dominant. The main concern would be for North Adelaide, not a single team in finals or goingto the classics. WOW. Considering they were the last club to beat Sturt for the overall trophy in 2004, thats a huge drop.

Reserve Boys

Sturt 15
Norwood 13
Forestville 8
West 3
Limestone Coast 3
South 2

Reserves Girls

Sturt 12
Forestville 10
North 6
Southern 5
Norwood 4
West 3
Esatern 2
Magic 1

Reserves seems to have been dominated by the bigger clubs. Seems to say that size only really matters in reserves, but help a ltille in State.

For the weekend;

Sturt - as dominant as usual. Maybe there best in a while.
Norwood - the big improvers, back to a top 3.
Foretville - couple of disapointed teams, but overall still very strong, especially in the girls.
Eastern - great result, didnt quite get the girls trophy they so coverted.
West - look to be doing better in lower grades, will we see a resurgance?
Southern - Not too Bad, 14 Boys look very good, need more consistancy over the board.
Centrals - Would be happy to score a point.
South - Not doing so well in either State or Reserves.
North - couple of reserves finals, but nothing in State. Very poor, something needs to change.

Re that incident in the Sturt Southern U1G8 semi, What Botti got teched for when 20 points down late in the game is a Southern girl hit her head badly on the ground, a sturt player immediately went to her attention during the game, the sturt player dribbling the ball unguarded was also concerned and just let the ball go out of court as she went to assist, the umpire then stopped the game, Botti went off his nut as he wanted pocession, a truely low act, not even concerned for his player, he is a discrace to the game, the umpire was absolutely correct.

The sturt girl shouldnt have had to throw the ball out of court, the umpires should have stopped the game.

then it would have been sturts ball at the re start

however because she threw it out of court it is tigers ball.

if tigers wanted to throw it in to sturt and do the right thing then so be it

No one is saying Boti was wrong. More that he behaved like a Jack$#%

That he was more concerned with 1 posession in a 20 point game, from a well meaning ref and opposition player, rather than the welfare of his own injured player.

King Botti

The only disgraceful act was from the Sturt girl who deliberately grabbed the Tigers girl arm and dragged her down causing the incident and concussion that kept her out of the next game.

Also is it a new Sturt tactic to have everyone talk and point across the keyway when the opposition are shooting foul shots? Just wondering as it happened constantly in this game.

Stop whinging about the special treatment and worry about improving your kids and club!

And no I'm not from Sturt I'm just one of the coaches who respects thier success but doesn't fear them or think my team gets tortured by refs, administration or Osama bin Laden if my team looses to them!

No wonder you loose to them because in yours heads your inferior you weak minded people! Guess it's easier blaming the world rather than saying maybe I don't work my kids hard enough or teach my kids the right style of basketball!

sick2death,
your post is simplistic. The posters are offering opinions on a sturt tradition of intimidating opposition players and in particular refs. There has been a long history of sturt girls coming through coached to push the boundaries of fair play and get away with it. Coaches and one in particular has a lot to answer for interms of abandoning fairplay in favour of dirty on court actions. In a nutshell many sturt girls receive instructions that only the decent girls don't obey.

Reply #318239 | Report this post

Not Suprised

Tiger,

Let me goet this straight. The refs dont call it a foul. Yet it was deliberate?

If those instructions are to play hard, to get up and in better players to stop them from catching the ball, and again the refs dont think it is a foul. Then surely that isnt unfair play.

And from what Ive seen, refs actually hate Sturt coaches. Not the other way around.

Whether the severe hit/foul against the Tiger girl was deliberate or accidential ( or a bit of both) she was hit hard and hit the ground hard ruling her out of the semis. BUT, Boti was rightfully angry that the referee did not stop the game while the girl was still laying on the court. The reason the Sturt girl threw the ball out of court WAS to stop the game...so a little kudos to her.
Boti got the tech foul and Surt got the throw in. Not a Sturt fan but to their credit all the Sturt girls made a point of going up upto the injured player after the game and shook her hand.
The referees really should have stopped the game before all this unfolded.
Not a great game, Sturt won by 15 (approx) in the end. Best way to deal with Sturt...beat them, not continually criticise them!!!!!

Reply #318244 | Report this post

Boti was not angry at the ref for not stopping the game. The game only stops if the player is in danger of the play.

He was purely having a go because the ref did the right thing and gave the ball back to Sturt.

If refs get intimidated easily and dont like to be critisised maybe they should rethink what they are doing because you get that in every sport and you need to take it on the chin and get over it!!! If refs call as best as they can see they need to get some huge glasses coz that is rediculous!! There is only about 3 or 4 refs that are ok at their job and the rest are crap!! I think anyone can do better than those refs they are crap! It is actually good that they are giving up because that means less crap referees and we might get a chance of getting the better referees!!!!
