Player Spotlight: Wade Helliwell

New blog up, this time on super-sub Wade Helliwell.

The hoops.com.au forums have often featured Wade, with some constantly ridiculing him and others appreciating the little things he does.

Will be interesting to see if he's brought back for next year, but we will need a big body and assuming we don't bring in a solid 7"0/280lb import I think he's worth bringing back. He's contributed in games against Khazzouh and Schensch and can do a job at times.

What do you think?

If he gets another contract it just shows bigs are in need in this league. He's not NBL standard anymore!

If the price is right (and it bloody well should be) I'd bring Helliwell back next season. I think under a new coach next season if given the ball a bit more he might be able to regain a bit of confidence and show some flashes of the 13ppg & 6rpg player he was back in his Bullets days.

A long time ago yes but he now looks like he's never played the game before and I refuse to believe you can degenerate to that extent at just 33 years old. If he was 40+ yo okay so therefore my diagnosis is a lack of confidence.

To me, Wade does need court time and specialist coaching to be "unmade" from the screen setting euro drone he obviously was overseas. At 33 these should actually be his peak years in Basketball, especially if he can keep injuries at a minimum. He's not a game winner, BUT he can PREVENT the other team from winning through a star "big" - and free the other guys in the front line up to do their thing offensively

- match him with a rebounding "SF" -( Catallini/Creek/Saville ? )- and an rebounding 3pt shooting 4/5 in the Ballinger/ Dave Nelson/M Worthington mold and you could have a V good strong front court.

Particularly if you have a mix of 5 players in those 3 spots who can get changed up a bit. Weigh could even do well in it.

I think he should be nothing more than a screen setting drone at the offensive end. He definitely has value matching up on bigger centres, certainly worth keeping for the right price. He might want to head to the new Melbourne team if they are interested to be back in his home town.

Where can I begin...Maybe back when he was best for the Boomers v Iran , here. Perhaps this week.
The POTW hasn't scored on him .
Neither have a few other star bigs.
Knocked some over with screens , but only a few really saw it. ..
..Who can believe him ...with hair like that..
During those training sessions , would've been a whole lot easier for Johnson , not having to go against him.
Here , we like rolling the team over each season ,
and he'd be handy for the new team , in his home town

I'd like to keep him as the 10th player. Plays the bruiser well in games and is very good training fodder for Johnson to toughen him up a bit. :-)

Am I correct in believing he is still being paid out by Melbourne and hence came to Adelaide as a relatively inexpensive player? Will this still be the case next season if I'm correct?

If the Sixers are his sole source of income during the NBL 2012/13 season then I imagine he might be seeking a pay rise from Adelaide, and especially at 33 years of age.

I do not know what the ongoing financial arrangements are with Wade but there is a guy running around at the moment about to play ABA who is basically the same size and age but currently is much more athletic and offers more options on the floor. Why not look at him instead of Wade. His name....Pero

Big Ads: Our "free ride' with Melbourne picking up his tab finishes this season. He will definitely cost more - for any club - next season.

I dont know he will be that much more expensive, there is a thing called supply and demand, and I cant imagine too many teams making big offers for a tenth man.
