Newley and Bishop win international medals

Not all doom and gloom in SA basketball just because the 36ers sucked this year:

Australian Boomers swingman Brad Newley has claimed the Gaze Medal for the first time in his career, for Men's International Basketball Player of the Year, announced at the Basketball Australia iiNet MVP Awards dinner from the Palladium at Crown on Monday night.
Jayco Australian Opals forward Abby Bishop has claimed the Women's Australian International Basketball Player of the Year Award, the Maher Medal, announced at the Basketball Australia iiNet MVP Awards dinner from the Palladium at Crown overnight.

How did Newley win this award? Anyone able to elaborate on the criteria?

If based on performance, then I would argue that David Andersen should have won it.

Which year are we awarding? I assume 2011?

We're talking exclusively about games played in the green and gold right?

Here's the NBL release:

Australian Boomers swingman Brad Newley has claimed the Gaze Medal for the first time in his career, for Men's International Basketball Player of the Year, announced at the Basketball Australia iiNet MVP Awards dinner from the Palladium at Crown on Monday night.

Newley was a key member of the Boomers' line-up which qualified the team for the London Olympic Games with a 3-0 sweep of the New Zealand Tall Blacks in September, 2011.

Newley provided plenty of highlights including a team high 12 points in the second game of the series.

Newley was also impressive at the London Test Event last year, dropping 23 points against Great Britain in their overtime victory at that tournament, to help the side secure four wins from five matches to finish second, following victories also over China, Croatia and Serbia. He averaged 15 points, 3.2 rebounds and 3.5 assists across the series.

Newley also traveled with the Boomers to Spain following the London test event, where the team played a series of friendly matches against the number two nation in the world, Spain.

Newley is currently playing with Spanish club Valencia alongside Boomers teammate A. J. Ogilvy, helping the side to a 15-11 season thus far in the Spain ACB Basketball League.

Bogut aside, it just shows how even our playing stocks are, both in the NBL and abroad. No standouts at the moment.
