Last of my "Player Spotlight's" is up. This time it's on Darren Ng

http://www.36reasons.net/2012/05/player-spotlight-darren-ng.html

What did you make of "Ninja's" 2011-2012 season?

Team needs to target his side of the floor more when in transition , his pull up 3 is deadly and always hard to box out when team is in trans.

There doesn't seem to be too many set plays for him to get his shot off.

If you have a shooter of his calibre you gotta use him. Unless he is given 5-6 good looks per game then he is wasted. Keep him and use him more.

Or he will end up interstate and blossoming like all ex adelaide players.

The only justification for re-signing Ng I see if is the 36ers sign Schenscher. A big low-post offensive threat who is also an excellent passer out of the post.

Darren Ng should be resigned no matter what.
He's the most local thing we have and most connected to the fans.

I don't see him fleeing interstate though. But he could get a job anywhere being a doctor.

Exactly the same questions get asked every year.
Why doesn't he get more open looks?
Does his offensive side make up for his defensive side?
Has he done enough to earn another contract?

Firstly, is it really the coach's fault that he doesn't get enough open looks? It's obvious he can knock it down if given the chance. You'd have to assume Marty is trying all he can to get him open. Could it be that Ng just doesn't work hard enough to get open? To get the same question under 3 coaches says it's not only the game plan at fault.

Secondly, With the gradual decline over the years of his offensive game, his defense has become more and more of a liability. He averaged 6ppg last season, you'd assume his direct opponent would have averaged comfortably more than that.

Thirdly, Ng seems to have a string of 4 or 5 games every year where things go right and he puts up 15+ points. This seems to be what earns him a contract for the following year. He also has a string of games (most of the others) where he doesn't look like hitting double figures. How many good games earn you a contract? How many bad games lose you one?

The 4th question that needs to be raised this year is Has Bartlett done enough to overtake Ng for a contract? Bartlett has shown as much offensive ability with more versatility, better defense and is younger/more upside. His shooting isn't as good, but that brings you back to question 1.

Like every year, we will put him aside for most of the preseason. Search for other options, then settle for Ng as the local favourite. He's a nice 'just in case' option, but I'd hope we aggressively search for a replacement this year.

If Adelaide sign Schenscher I think Ng would be a smart signing, not as a main rotation guy but someone who comes in when a spark is needed and feeds off Luke in the post.

I also think Drew Warren would be a smart signing as the starting SG if Luke is signed. With good money being committed to Schenscher, Johnson, Weigh, Creek and an import PG, Drew could be a good value for money pick-up to spread the D, and we know he likes the Adelaide rims!

Ng is probably one of the better team defenders on our side. He comes on the floor knocks down a three. People try and take him on the floor but he is normally too quick. How offensive fouls this year has did he manage to pick up on the import point guard.

Ng is 9th on the 36ers' all time 3 point shooting percentages (39%). His ranking is largely due to 3 seasons where he shot above 40% from the 3 point line. The seasons were 2011 (42%, Clarke coaching), 2010 (46%, Ninnis coaching) and 2007 (43%, Smyth coaching).

The rest of his career, he's shot the 3 at below 36%. He's returned low and high seasonal 3 pt percentages for all 3 coaches he's played under at the 36ers. Like Hendo8888, I can only conclude it's not the game plan and coaching.

It seems to have more to do with his one dimensional game. Most of the players above him on the 3 point shooting percentages with the 36ers could create their own shots and are or were much more versatile and harder to defend - Maher, Ballinger, Pearce, McKay, Cattalini, Farley, Brooks. the other 2 were Forman and Kubank and Kubank brought outstanding defence.

So, if we have a team that will allow him to camp outside the 3 and wait for the ball to be kicked out for a set shot, then he's worth getting. If he will consistently have to work to create his own shot, then probably not. So a Schenscher at the pivot or a strong point guard who can penetrate at will (a la Ervin) would be needed.

Problem is Marty never dicided between Darren and Herbert as to who was the first shooting guard off the bench.

It changed game by game and neither of them could get a flow on , the other one was always thrown in the minute a mistake was made or triples were not hit.

Hard for a player to know his place when this happens.
