Cairns looking for a 'big banger' import

From Paulo Kennedy on the NBL site:

Will we see a different style from Cairns this year?

No, we'll definitely continue to run the Shuffle, and when the opportunity presents to push the ball we’ll do that. The game’s just easier when you’ve got guys who can shoot the ball. Cam Gliddon and Clint can obviously shoot it, Tragardh runs that middle lane pretty well and Jamar can do what he does. We’re trying pretty hard to get Alex done as well, because when he’s on he’s pretty good as well.

So does that change what you are looking for from your second import?

Yeah, we will probably be looking for more of a big banger, a wide body who’s tough and physical. But I’ve got plenty of time to get that done.

Sounds like Aron Baynes, a North Queensland boy...

Yeah that type of player. Unfortunately we don’t have the coin to get Aron just yet, he has aspirations of really establishing himself in Europe and we obviously support that. But he’s a Cairns boy, so we’ll see what happens down the track.
Even if Loughton stays? Or is this talk just to make Loughton feel a little expendable? Or perhaps they expect him to stay and still want the muscle backing Loughton and Tragardh up?

Cant think of anybody in SEABL that would match that description. Most bigs are 6-6 at SEABl where as i think he'll be looking at 6-7 to 6-9 moose.

Picture of Alex Loughton in Taipans uniform today. Alex had an option for a 3rd year but wasn't taken up. Seemed funny till you notice that he dropped a point to 8. I believe he has re-signed with the club at the lower points ranking. You don't do corp sponsor trips for a club you don't intend on staying around for. Trigger/Loughton will share the PF duties - inside game + outside game giving Fearne Offensive and defensive options.

Venom, technically they're obliged to do clinics until the end of the financial year (for most contracts).

Cairns are looking VERY good. If Steindl is near Bose standard and Gliddon is anything like his stats show, Cairns will be very tough. They have added so many more dimensions to their game with this new roster. Get Brad Hill back along with a big import (someone like Grant/Simpson that would come in to bring ridiculous amounts of energy and own the paint for 25 minutes a game), and they will cover everything offensively and defensively. Top 2 for sure.

@Isaac - never heard of a contract that extended beyond a few weeks after the end of the season. If your not getting paid why would you hang around ?

I think a lot of local players have 12 month contracts, dont they?

The only problem is, without Crosswhite they lose a big anchor of their defense. The other big they bring in needs to have a solid understanding of that end of the floor.

Spursfan - Steindl will be a servicable player for Cairns, but he is nowhere near Bose's standard. Bose averaged 22ppg his senior year. Steindl averaged 9ppg.

@Vart, have a look at the schools they played for. It can be argued that the St Marys starting five could all get drafted, that is one quality team. Bose played for a no-name school.

Venom, I think most non-import contracts are for 12 months and break at the end of the financial year. Clubs often make allowances for off-season holidays but players will generally clear those with their coaches. Hawks players have still been doing appearances, going by their social media feeds.
