Lets get things under way with Australia's preliminary squad...

Australia
FIBA Ranking: 9

David ANDERSEN / 211cm / Centre / Montepaschi Siena (Italy)
David BARLOW / 205cm / Guard-Forward / UCAM Murcia (Spain)
Aron BAYNES / 207cm / Centre / Ikaros Kallitheas (Greece)
Anatoly BOSE / 200cm / Guard / Sydney Kings (Australia)
Ryan BROEKHOFF / 201cm / Guard-Forward / Valparaiso (NCAA) (USA)
Peter CRAWFORD / 193cm / Guard / Townsville Crocodiles (Australia)
Mitch CREEK / 197cm / Forward / Adelaide 36ers (Australia)
Matt DELLAVEDOVA / 190cm / Guard / St Mary's College (NCAA) (USA)
Anthony DRMIC / 196cm / Guard / Boise State (NCAA) (USA)
Adam GIBSON / 188cm / Guard / Gold Coast Blaze (Australia)
Hugh GREENWOOD 189cm / Guard / New Mexico (NCAA) (USA)
Joe INGLES / 203cm / Forward / Regal FC Barcelona (Spain)
Nathan JAWAI / 208cm / Forward / UNCIS Kazan (Russia)
Daniel JOHNSON / 212cm / Centre / Adelaide 36ers (Australia)
Julian KHAZZOUH / 209cm / Centre / Sydney Kings (Australia)
Daniel KICKERT / 208cm / Forward / PGE Turow (Poland)
Matt KNIGHT / 204cm / Forward-Centre / Perth Wildcats (Australia)
Aleks MARIC / 211cm / Centre / Panathinaikos (Greece)
Damian MARTIN / 188cm / Guard / Perth Wildcats (Australia)
Patrick MILLS / 183cm / Guard / San Antonio Spurs (USA)
Brock MOTUM / 206cm / Forward / Washington State (NCAA) (USA)
Brad NEWLEY / 199cm / Guard-Forward / Valencia (Spain)
Matthew NIELSEN / 209cm / Forward / BC Khimki (Russia)
AJ OGILVY / 211cm / Forward-Centre / Valencia (Spain)
Jesse WAGSTAFF / 203cm / Forward / Perth Wildcats (Australia)
Mark WORTHINGTON / 202cm / Forward / Gold Coast Blaze (Australia)

Daniel Johnson came into the squad for an injured Matt Knight. Andrew Bogut made himself unavailable due to his recovery from injury.

Top 4 in the group is achievable, but will most likely result in a game against the USA. Should be aiming for top 3 in the group, and will need to probably beat Brazil alongside Great Britain and China to make that happen. No easy games in this group which is likely to get a tough Euro team added from the Olympic Qualification tournament. Top 8 should be the goal.

So who will make the final 12 for London?

And sticking with Group B, here is Great Britain's preliminary squad...

Great Britain
FIBA Ranking: 43

Ogo ADEGBOYE / 183cm / Guard / St. Bonaventure, NCAA (USA)
Robert ARCHIBALD / 209cm / Forward / Unicaja Malaga (Spain)
Eric BOATENG / 208cm / Centre / Denver Nuggets (USA)
Matt BRYAN-AMANING / 206cm / Forward / Washington, NCAA (USA)
Daniel CLARK / 208cm / Forward / Estudientes Madrid (Spain)
Luol DENG / 206cm / Forward / Chicago Bulls (USA)
Laurence EKPERIGIN / 201cm / Forward / Gran Canaria (Spain)
Joel FREELAND / 208cm / Forward / Unicaja Malaga (Spain)
Ben GORDON / 191cm / Guard / Detroit Pistons (USA)
Kyle JOHNSON / 193cm / Guard / Long Island University (NCAA) (USA)
Andrew LAWRENCE / 185cm / Guard / College of Charleston (NCAA) (USA)
Mike LENZLY / 185cm / Guard / Cez Nymburk (Czech Republic)
Pops MENSAH BONSU /206cm / Centre / Be?ikta? (Turkey)
Byron MULLENS / 213cm / Centre / Charlotte Bobcats (USA)
Nate REINKING / 183cm / Guard / Mons - Hainaut (Belgium)
Ryan RICHARDS / 211cm / Forward / San Antonio Spurs (USA)
Andrew SULLIVAN / 203cm / Forward / Mersey Tigers (Great Britain)
Devon VAN OOSTRUM / 191cm / Guard / Caja Laboral (Spain)

Squad currently boasts 5 current NBA players headlined by Gordon and Deng. Also includes 5 players that are plying their trade in arguably the best European national league in the Spanish ACB. I believe their potential defies their ranking. If they gel, they could be a real handful in front of a home crowd...

And also here is Brazil's preliminary s quad...

Brazil
FIBA Ranking: 13

Leandro BARBOSA / 191cm / Guard / Indiana Pacers (USA)
Ricardo FISCHER / 185cm / Guard / Sao Jose (Brazil)
Alex GARCIA / 191cm / Guard / Brasilia (Brazil)
Guilherme GIOVANNONI / 204cm / Forward / Brasilia (Brazil)
Rafael HETTSHEIMER / 209cm / Forward / CAI Zaragoza (Spain)
Nene HILARIO / 211cm / Centre / Washington Wizards (USA)
Marcelo HUERTAS / 190cm / Guard / Regal FC Barcelona (Spain)
Marcelo MACHADO / 201cm / Guard / Flamengo (Brazil)
Raul NETO / 186cm / Guard / Minas Tenis Clube (Brazil)
Ronald REIS / 211cm / Centre / Brasilia (Brazil)
Tiago SPLITTER / 211cm / Forward / San Antonio Spurs (USA)
Larry TAYLOR / 185cm / Guard / Itabom/Bauru (Brazil)
Caio TORRES / 211cm / Centre / Flamengo (Brazil)
Anderson VAREJAO / 211cm / Centre / Clevland Cavaliers (USA)
Marcus VIEIRA / 207cm / Forward / Pinheiros (Brazil)

Brazil will be the ones the Aussies may well have to beat to make the Group B top 3. They boast 4 NBA players and 2 guys playing in the Spanish ACB. They will be unable to start all 4 NBA players due to on court balance issues, their front court a clear strength, but no team should underestimate their outside shooting capabilities. On their day could push Spain all the way. Will be tough in Group B.

And still with Group B, China...

China
FIBA Ranking: 10

Jianghua CHEN / 188cm / Guard / Guangdong Southern Tigers (China)
Jinhui DING / 204cm / Forward / Zhejiang Wanma Cyclones (China)
Jianpeng DUAN / 197cm / Guard / Shanxi Zhongyu (China)
Dejun HAN / 215cm / Centre / Liaoning Panpan Hunters (China)
Xiaoxu LI / 210cm / Forward / Liaoning Panpan Hunters (China)
Wei LIU / 190cm / Guard / Shanghai Sharks (China)
Wei SU / 213cm / Centre / Guangdong Southern Tigers (China)
Yue SUN / 206cm / Forward / Beijing Aoshen Olympian (USA)
Shipeng WANG / 198cm / Guard / Guangdong Southern Tigers (China)
Zhelin WANG / 213cm / Centre / Fujian (China)
Zhizhi WANG / 215cm / Centre / Bayi Rockets (China)
Mugedaer XIRELIJIANG / 191cm / Guard / Xinjiang Flying Tigers (China)
Ming YANG / 193cm / Guard / Liaoning Panpan Hunters (China)
Jianlian YI / 212cm / Forward / Dallas Mavericks (USA)
Li YI / 203cm / Forward / Jiangsu Dragons (China)
Xiaochuan ZHAI / 205cm / Forward / Beijing Ducks (China)
Bo ZHANG / 199cm / Forward / Bayi Rockets (China)
Zhaoxu ZHANG / 221cm / Centre / Shanghai Sharks (China)
Peng ZHOU / 210cm / Forward / Guangdong Southern Tigers (China)
Fangyu ZHU / 201cm / Forward / Guangdong Southern Tigers (China)
Yanxi ZHU / 210cm / Centre / Beijing Ducks (China)

Despite a relatively high ranking of 10, China is arguably the weakest team in Group B and is likely to struggle to earn a win in my opinion.

And the Group B favourites...this is all I could find on their preliminary squad from the London 2012 site but given there is only 11 players listed, I'm not sure it is correct?

Spain
FIBA Ranking: 2

José CALDERON / 192cm / Guard / Toronto Raptors (USA)
Víctor CLAVER / 207cm / Forward / Valencia (Spain)
Rudy FERNANDEZ / 198cm / Forward / Denver Nuggets (USA)
Marc GASOL / 216cm / Centre / Memphis Grizzlies (USA)
Pau GASOL / 214cm / Centre / Los Angeles Lakers (USA)
Serge IBAKA / 208cm / Forward / Oklahoma City Thunder (USA)
Sergio LLULL / 192cm / Guard / Real Madrid (Spain)
Juan Carlos NAVARRO / 192cm / Guard / FC Barcelona (Spain)
Felipe REYES / 206cm / Forward / Real Madrid (Spain)
Victor SADA / 192cm / Guard / FC Barcelona (Spain)
Fernando SAN EMETERIO / 197cm / Guard / Caja Laboral (Spain)

The benchmark in Group B, and possibly the only team that has the capability to push the USA for gold even with Rubio on the sidelines.

Mills, Delly, Ingles, Andersen, Jawai: Newley, Barlow, Maric, Baynes, crawford, Nielson, Dmric.

Thats my 12. dont know if thats what BB will go with. Dmric looks really good to me, he could be anything and i would take him to an olympics and just learn. Maybe lacking depth in the PG position but patty has to play big minutes if we are to go far in this campaign. Delly has just impressed me so much with his BBall IQ. Crawford simply outside shooting, we sucked bad at the world champs so im taking him. I think ingles is ready to step up now, well we need him to. Newley well i thought he would be so much better then he is at this stage of his career, hope he proves me wrong. Concerned about our rebounding and interior defence, hopefully jawai can add some strength there. Would be good to see a healthy bogut there.

My Boomers team based on the squad:

Andersen
Jawai
Maric
Nielsen
Barlow
Worthington
Ingles
Crawford
Newley
Mills
Dellavedova
Gibson

Our biggest weakness is perimeter scoring. We are open to teams filling up the lanes and daring us to shoot. Andersen is arguably our best perimter threat, and possibly even Daniel Kickert who is not likely to make the team! when Delly hits the court, I would think he would take over the ball handling duties on offence to free up Mills as a shooter, and then take the opposition's shooting guard at the defensive end.

G - Gibbo is nicknamed "auto" for a reason he's automatic from the perimeter and can penetrate better inside than Martin! That's based on this season!

LC - I think Jawai will miss again and I think Julian Kazzouh will get the go ahead as he was 'lucky' to spend some time with the golden state warriors in summer league before they acquired bogut! Just haven't heard much from jawai camp since he left the nbl over i think 4 years ago! Plus Brett Brown and Shane Heal have soft spots for him! lol

Nice work LC.

- Anon #363445: It's definitely not too early for this 'crap'. It's less than a month until the Boomers have to name their 12-man team for London (June 20 deadline).

- sitiveni: I agree with you that Drmic looks promising, however I don't see BB taking anyone to London 'just to learn'. He's in the squad to learn, but won't make the final team unless we sustain a couple of serious injuries in the guard position.

In terms of our final 12, well, it's quite tough and I wouldn't want to in BB's shoes. I've had a 'final 15' in my head for a while now;

Andersen
Barlow
Baynes
Crawford
Dellavedova
Gibson
Ingles
Jawai
Maric
Martin
Mills
Newley
Nielsen
Ogilvy
Worthington

It's difficult to seperate these guys at the moment, but I'd suggest if Jawai does play Ogilvy will be first man cut.

I can't really see anyone else pushing the final squad, unless we suffer some serious injuries. If that does happen, I'd see Hugh Greenwood possibly come into the fray, as he's been part of the Boomers program for the entire duration of BB's coaching stint. Another outside chance is Daniel Kickert, purely for his shooting ability, but our bigs are really strong so he's a real long shot.

The one guy that I reckon is a real smokey is Ryan Broekoff. He's really versatile, which is a great asset in international play. Plus he addresses our two greatest weaknesses from Turkey, rebounding and perimeter shooting. Hopefully he gets a run in the YouYi games against China (that could be a topic for another post LC - our squad for the YouYi games. See which of the young blokes will get a run.)

Just looking at our entire squad, there are only 15 guys that will definitely be available for the YouYi games, as a lot of the others will still be committed to playoffs in Europe. The series v China will be a good opportunity for the regular Boomers to cement their spot, whilst also giving the young guys three games to stake a claim on ticket to London.

Aron BAYNES / 207cm / Centre
Anatoly BOSE / 200cm / Guard
Ryan BROEKHOFF / 201cm / Guard-Forward
Peter CRAWFORD / 193cm / Guard
Mitch CREEK / 197cm / Forward
Matt DELLAVEDOVA / 190cm / Guard
Anthony DRMIC / 196cm / Guard
Adam GIBSON / 188cm / Guard
Hugh GREENWOOD 189cm / Guard
Daniel JOHNSON / 212cm / Centre
Julian KHAZZOUH / 209cm / Centre
Damian MARTIN / 188cm / Guard
Brock MOTUM / 206cm / Forward
Jesse WAGSTAFF / 203cm / Forward
Mark WORTHINGTON / 202cm / Forward

Cool, thanks for the update Anon.

Barlow played in the YouYi games last year. Was one of only three (along with Martin and Baynes) from that series that ended up on the full-strength team for the Olympic qualifiers.

I think being a Olympic year we'll see quite a few more guys put their hand up for YouYi games action this time around.

Navarro is listed on the London 2012 website as being in the Spanish team, but as I mentioned I'm not sure how accurate that is (but they did not have Rubio listed...)

One would think Nielsen needs some decent minutes as does Jawai given they were both lucky to get 15 minutes a game this past season.

I agree LC, but I'd dare say Nielsen will be rested from the YouYi series. Perhaps borrow a line from Gregg Popovich and put a DNP-OLD next to him! Nielsen is a certainty to go to London, so I think he'll take it easy during the Perth camp, and then put his feet up while the young fellas take on the Chinese.

As for Jawai, given his long absence from the Boomers program, I would think he won't have any choice but to play the YouYi. The coaching staff will probably make it mandatory for him if he wants any chance at going to London.

Brits could surprise a few people, plenty of talent on that list! I imagine that it may not be at full strength for various reasons, but the nba talent might show seeing that it's on home court so to speak. Bothers me to think they could beat us, I really dislike losing to the poms.

Boomers are going to have to shoot high % from deep to get wins. Brazil, Brits and Spain could really do us over otherwise. Our offense just isn't high powered enough for mine... We will get found out, Newley/ Ingles/ Barlow have been exposed against opposing big name teams 2-3 men in previous tournaments. We can look forward to some wins against China though, they look average.

Jawai needs to play YouYi to prove to all he can get it done in boomers colors. I will never forget how much he sucked against NZ a few years back, him and AJ got outplayed by Alex Pledger, embarrassing. Pledger just wanted it more, doesn't have half the talent of Jawai or AJ

I actually think NZ could come first in their group but they'll have to top Macedonia who despite a low ranking and liitle international reknown made it past Lithuania and eventually fell to Russia in the semis of the eurobasket. If they come first, NZ should face a beatable Dominican republic in the Q`s, but will still have to get pass Lithuania (most likely) in the semis...

And Captain Dan, Jawai not doing anything since leaving the NBL? what about 2 years in the NBA and 2 years playing for elite euroleague teams? He's gotta be in there...I mean can like Worthington even be in this discussioin if Jawai doesn't get a run. He's unstoppable in the post against teams wth no dominant big

Des: I totally agree with you about the Brits. They definitely have some serious talent on their roster. If they are able to field a full strength team, in front of their home crowd they will be a handful. Certainly no easybeat. Whilst there aren't really any easy games at the Olympics these days, on the surface it would appear China are the weakest team in our group. And with the qualifier likely to be Russia, Lithuania or Greece, the group doesn't get any easier!

Vart would love to see those players playing in the YouYi Games. alot wont go to the olympics but great to see some of the future guys. really want to see Broekhoff, Drmic and also Motum play. I think Jawai will play and make the olympic team. Although he didnt play big minutes he had a high field goal % and like tiago splitter he sets a good pick. which i think will help patty and the style the spurs play.

Vart also i remember Barry Barnes taking a young Brett Maher to the 94 world champs and think he played 2 minutes in the whole tourny, also i think he took a young sam mackinnon to the 96 olympics. I hope BB does take one of these youngsters and if he does i would take drmic.

sitiveni and paul - Brett Maher didn't go to the 1994 Worlds, but I always like taking a trip down memory lane, so check out our roster from that tournament below;

Andrew Gaze
Andrew Vlahov
Damien Keogh
Greg Hubbard
Mark Bradtke
Mike McKay
Pat Reidy
Paul Rees
Phil Smyth
Ray Borner
Shane Heal
Tony Ronaldson

This was the tournament where Gaze led all scoring, but didn't make the All-Tournament team.

I remember staying up late watching these games on SBS. Those were the days! I also vividly remember Bradtke playing as an undersized centre, as Longley wasn't available, and I remember him absolutely dominating! Ah, the memories. Thanks fellas!

Anyway, I digress, and back to the current team. Whilst I see where you're going sitiveni, I still don't see Brett Brown taking a young guy to London just for the experience. I think he has had the most systematic approach of any coach in respect to seeing all of our best talent over the past 3-4 years, and has really built a true national depth chart.

I maintain that he would have a pretty solid idea of who the 12 players going to London would be, but would be open to a couple of couple of guys putting their hands up for the final spots with outstanding performances during the Perth camp and YouYi Games.

I believe the final 12-man roster has to be submitted by June 20, so the team that takes the floor during the Farewell Games against Greece will likely be our best team (less Patty of course if the Spurs are still playing in the NBA Finals.)

The Brits may have some real talent but who's to say they won't implode under the expectations like so many of their other sporting teams have. All it will take is a hiccup in their first game and their media will make their lives hell.

While it would be sad to see them fail at home, I'll happily take any advantage we can get in order to make it to the last 8.

Yeh i agree, i dont think BB will take one of the youngsters but i wish he would as the 11th and 12th players arent going to get much court time if any, anyways. Yeh 94, 96. too long ago to remember. was it 94 or 96 heal and barkley went toe to toe just before the main tourny. i got that game on tape somewhere. Bradtke was a pretty decent rebounder though, something i dont think our bigs are that great at.

hoopie - I like your thinking mate. Whilst it would be sad for the Brits to fall on their faces on home soil, if it means we finish ahead of them I'll take it!

Anon #363659 - Damian Martin is a consistent outside shot away from being an international superstar. He does everything you could want from a PG, and more. Very underrated still, despite being NBL All-First team and NBL defensive player of the year.

sitiveni and LC - Please stop reminding us that Penney is a Kiwi! It just makes me mad! I still watch last year's Olympic qualifiers game 1 when he absolutely tore us apart (specifically Ingles and Newley). Perhaps we can make a new rule that all nations can recruit one player from another nation in their FIBA zone if that other nation doesn't qualify for the Olympics/World Cup?!?! Ha ha. That would fix our shooting guard problems right there.

On Delly, there is an article in this months Inside Sport magazine, and Brett Brown says that Delly is purely a PG as far as he's concerned, but he will likely see minutes with Patty playing the two next to him. In my opinion, those guys should start together. Delly is our best playmaker, and Patty our best scorer. On D, Patty would guard opposing PG, and Delly would take the bigger two guard.

And on the kid's coming though, they're being referred to as the 'sons of guns'. Yep, you've got Cecil Exum's son Dante, who is now in the record books as the youngest ever participant at a Boomers camp after being invited last year by BB at just 15. You've got Brad Pineau's son Dane, who projects to be a decent big, despite the fact that he's still a beanpole. There is Nigel Purchase's son Jack, who can shoot the heck out of the ball. One guy not mentioned often is Tad Dufelmeier's son, Tad Jnr. He's a feisty little scoring point guard out of the ACT (sound like anyone else we know from up that way?). But the kid with the big wraps, perhaps we can call him the Aussie big ticket, is David Simmon's son Ben. Just 15, and already 200cm, he play's above the rim, has a sweet jumper, and runs the floor like a guard. Some people are already talking NBA for him, so he's got a lot of pressure to live up to. Exciting times for sure!

Historically the home team has faired reasonably well at the WC's so I will not be surprised if GB do a lot better than their ranking suggests.

I was referencing Patty Mills, thanks LC. I probably shouldnt be, because its a bit unfair to both guys, and Tad Jnr doesn't really hold a candle to Patty at this stage. However, given the way they both play and that they're both from the ACT I think the comparisons will be inenvitable.

Also, I 100% agree about Nick Duncan. The kid is a beast. I was purely focusing on the sons of former players, but there is some serious talent coming through the junior ranks at the moment. The current group of under 17 boys are being referred to as the male equivalent of the golden Opals era that all came through together (Lauren Jackson, Penny Taylor and co.) Massive wraps, but its exciting times for Aussie hoops.

Totally agree Vart on the current batch of youngsters coming through - the cream of them are certainlt elite - especially Exum, Simmons and Duncan. But a few others in that group are not far behind.

Absolutely LC. If Ben Simmons and Dante Exum can achieve half of what Jackson and Taylor have, they will probably go down in history as our two best ever male players. It's a lot of pressure for them to live up to, hopefully they have good role models around them (aside from their Dad's) to keep them on track.

Don't forget another 15yr old in Thon Maker

http://prospect-central.blogspot.com.au/2012/05/thon-maker-8th-grader-dominates-in-3rd.html

The kid is ranked the No.1 player in the States in the 2016 class(on a high school ranking site anyway), and did pretty damn well at the 3rd session of the Nike Eyebl, in one game he hit 19pts, 8rebounds, 2 assists and 5 blocks and this is against kids several years older then him. 4th and last seasion of the Eybl is starting tomorrow so hopefully he does just as well then.

Hopefully he comes back home at some point and reps for Aus in the u17/19's for us.

I have been looking for some youtube footage of Nick Duncan, with no success. Anyone know where I can see some footage of him playing?

Any idea if he will grow much taller? 6'7 as a PF is not really big enough on the international scene.

Duncan is turning just 16, and has plenty of time to grow...
