Battle for 5th Spot - CABL

So with the season getting towards the pointy end, I wanted to have a look at the potential Finals 5th placing.

Mens:

Battling for 5th spot are Woodville (currently 5th on 7-5) and Norwood (currently 6th on 7-6).

The run home looks like:

Woodville (7-5):

V North @ St.Clair - L (Havent played yet)
V North @ Hillcrest - L (Havent played yet)
V Southern @ St.Clair - W (Won by 31 Rd6)
V Norwood @ MARS - ?? (Lost by 7 Rd7)
V Eastern @ St.Clair - W (Won by 11 Rd8)
V Sturt @ Pasadena - L (Lost by 23 Rd9)

Record Without Norwood Game 9-8

Norwood (7-6)

V Eastern @ MARS - W (Won by 11 Rd5)
V Sturt @ Pasadena - L (Lost by 21 Rd6)
V Woodville @ MARS - ?? (Won by 7 Rd7)
V West @ Pt.Adelaide - L (Lost by 4 Rd8)
V Forestville @ MARS - L (Won by 5 Rd9)

Record Without Woodville Game 8-9

With Norwood holding the split heading into game 2 - Round 16 looks to be a sure fire cracker of a game! If Norwood drop this game, and the other results pan out Round 18 could then be huge, with Norwood needing to beat Forestville (again) and hoping that Sturt can knock off the Warriors. Woodville need to desperatley pinch a game off North this weekend, which would arguably have to be the seasons toughest double header. If they can do this, it will go a long way to securing their finals spot.

My predicition is Norwood to sneak into the 5 by beating Woodville Round 16.

Womens:

Battling for 5th spot are Southern (Currently 5th on 8-5) and Eastern (Currently 6th on 6-7)

The run home looks like:

Southern (8-5):

V Sturt @ MV - W (Won by 25 Rd5)
V Woodville @ St.Clair - W (Won by 7 Rd6)
V West @ MV - L (Won by 17 Rd7)
V Forestville @ Wayville - L (Won by 5 Rd8)
V Centrals @ MV - L (Won by 15 Rd9)

Should finish on 10-8

Eastern (6-7)

V Norwood @ MARS - L (Lost by 14 Rd5)
V South @ Marion - W (Won by 13 Rd6)
V Sturt @ Hills - W (won by 7 Rd7)
V Woodville @ St.Clair - W (Won by 14 Rd8)
V West @ Hills - L (Won by 8 Rd9)

Should finish on 9-9

Eastern have had the wood on Southern twice this year, and Southern would be well aware of this. They will be doing everything they can to keep a game in hand. I have pencilled both teams in for a L against West - however depending on which West shows up will determine which way these games go.

Big games for Eastern are definitley Round 14 and Round 18 - to be a chance for the 5 they have to pinch one of these. Tess must play and she must be fit.

Big games for Southern are Round 14 and Round 15 - if they win both of these they are all but secured a top spot.

If Southern drop one of the next two - are put in a must win situation against West, Forestville or Centrals, and in a do or die - I dont like their chances against the latter two.

My predicition is Southern to stay in the 5 - just...

West women definately on the improve, they may prove the finals shaper as teams maybe taking them too lightly on the basis of their early season form. But beware they are improving and growing in confidence with every outing.

Any news on Tess Madgen after the weekend? Got poleaxed and only played 10-12 mins.
Makes the Eastern win all the more meritorious.

Tess is still the difference between winning and losing for this team. But good on them for lifting without her.

V Forestville @ MARS - L (Won by 5 Rd9)

Record Without Woodville Game 8-9

Norwood must steal a game from one of the top contenders, plus knock off Woodville in Round 16 to make this years finals. Tough run home - but they are definitley capable!

My predicition is still Norwood to just sneak into the 5 - somehow.

V West @ Hills - L (Won by 8 Rd9)

Should finish on 10-9

Southern in desperate need to find 2 wins from there last four games. If they only manage 1 win, and Eastern win 2 from 4 - Eastern will make it through.

My predicition has changed from last week, as its amazing what can happen in a week. Eastern knocking off Norwood at home - and they will take 5th spot in the finals.

Updated after Round 15.

MENS:

The run home looks like:

Woodville before Round 14 (7-5):

V North @ St.Clair - LOST
V North @ Hillcrest - WON
V Southern @ St.Clair - LOST

Now Sitting 8-7

V Norwood @ MARS - ?? (Lost by 7 Rd7)
V Eastern @ St.Clair - W (Won by 11 Rd8)

Record Without Norwood Game 9-8

Norwood before Round 14 (7-6)

V Eastern @ MARS - WON
V Sturt @ Pasadena - WON

Now sitting 9-6

V Woodville @ MARS - ?? (Won by 7 Rd7)
V West @ Pt.Adelaide - L (Lost by 4 Rd8)
V Forestville @ MARS - L (Won by 5 Rd9)

Record Without Woodville Game 9-8

Norwood have stolen a game off the top placed Sturt. Norwood have a tougher run home, facing 2 of the top 4 plus Woodville, so even though they are a game in hand, Woodville have a gimme game against Eastern to even the ledger.

This Round 16 clash is huge - most important game of both teams regular season. If Woodville win, Norwood then must take out the Bearcats or the Feagles and make sure they protect their head to head lead. If Woodville hit their straps and also knock off Sturt, it then forces Norwood to a must win situation and protect there head to head advantage (7 points)

Winner of this Round 16 game - will play finals Basketball. Based on current form, its hard to go past the flames after they tamed the sabres, and the tigers mauled the warriors. Norwood have the experienced heads who have played finals for a number of years, can Woodville make a reappearance come August? Woodville dont seem to play well on their home court, so lucky its at MARS. Im tipping the flames - based solely on current form.

WOMENS:

The run home looks like:

Southern before Round 14 (8-5):

V Sturt @ MV - LOST
V Woodville @ St.Clair - WON

Now sitting 9-6

V West @ MV - L (Won by 17 Rd7)
V Forestville @ Wayville - L (Won by 5 Rd8)
V Centrals @ MV - L (Won by 15 Rd9)

Should finish on 9-9

Eastern before the weekend (6-7)

V Norwood @ MARS - WON
V South @ Marion - WON

Now sitting 8-7

V Sturt @ Hills - W (won by 7 Rd7)
V Woodville @ St.Clair - W (Won by 14 Rd8)
V West @ Hills - L (Won by 8 Rd9)

Should finish on 10-8

Could this be the first season for a long time that features both Centrals and Eastern in the womens finals?

It is hard to believe that if Tess plays, Eastern will go any worse than 10-8. Whilst I have pencilled in West as a loss for both teams - depending on which West rocks up, is whether its a W or a L for both teams. If Tess plays all 3, Eastern to go 11-7.

The run home for Southern is much tougher. Playing 2 out of the top 4 sides, plus an unpredictable West, makes playing finals basketball that much more of a task. Southern must win 2 out of the last 3, to even be a chance. To secure a secure a finals place - they must take all 3. With the head coach away this weekend, plus their 2nd leading scorer and rebounder and also their highest % field goal scorer, it makes it that much tougher.

My prediction is Eastern to make the 5, and the mid-season slide from Southern to be curtains on what has to be viewed as a disappointing season.

Am I on the money?

Eastern men are not longer a gimme

and you are right depends which West Women's team turns up on the night

Eastern in the women for mine

and too close to call in the men's who would have thought Norwood would beat Sturt and Woodville would go down to Southern.
