NBA Jerseys to advertise sponsors

The NBA have announced a proposal which would see in 2013 teams to have sponsors advertised on jerseys much like sport here in Australia. Obviously there is a lot of money to be made by doing this but personally I respected that the NBA was established enough to not have to implement jersey advertisements. One of the many articles below.

The All Blacks are a great example of refusing sponsorship. They turned down a deal with AIG worth $100m

time to buy up jerseys, especially the those players set to stay with their teams or with 5 year contracts at least

Macdub, if that figure is right, then the Allblacks are fools. That's $100M of junior development that can't happen.

I have no issue with it at all.

I would like to see it go further. I want to see Nike a to tattoo the swoosh on their face. How much for LeBron to do it? $250M?

Just goes to show the prestige of the ABs jersey IMO. Good to see tradition favoured over commercialism

There are plenty of spots to advertise, I dont know really why any leagues need to put sponsorship on there jerseys, its ugly!

I agree with Baller3.

I'm a rugby league fan and the sponsor logos stand out more than the team logo itself. Therefore its like you're playing for the sponsor rather than the team.

It's so congested in rugby league on the clothing that it looks tremendously hideous, that I refrain from buying merchandise.

I hope the NBA do it more tastefully.

if it helps the smaller market franchises I'm all for it. most other pro sports have sponsors on their uniforms. otherwise they could implement a hard cap to try and bring the operational costs down

Maybe if NBA teams stopped offering max deals to anyone/over paying players then they wouldn't need to sell advertising space on jerseys.

If/when this goes a ahead, i will stop buying NBA jerseys.

What is wrong with logos on jersey?

Nothing like advertising in Australia, it's a small 2 inch by 2 inch panel opposite the current nba logo. NBL, league, union, cricket, soccer all have massive sponsor logos splashed across the front. The nba uniforms won't have this level of advertising.

It's a disgrace, greedy greedy people. Seeing a coke logo on a NBA jersey will not make me want to go out and buy one! I think that's the best thing with American sport ; NBA, NFL, NHL and MLB all have no corporate interference on the Court / field or uniforms. It's fine if they go to a timeout saying "this game is brought to you by" but putting logos on jerseys is just greed.

As Stern would say : "it's a business"
