Lauren Jackson named as Olympic flagbearer

Few articles and mentions around the place suggesting Lauren Jackson could be Australian flagbearer. A few cyclists were previously fancied for the role but Nick Green accidentally mentioned that no Australian cyclist would be marching, and a betting plunge on LJ as flagbearer followed. Green apparently paused, realising his mistake, and suggested that there might be an exception.

"It's someone with absolutely outstanding leadership qualities and I can't wait to make the announcement, it has been an absolute pleasure going through that process and making that decision."

Brilliant sportswoman (not only in her sport, but compared to other elite Olympians), but i reckon there's a few others that are more deserving.

would be good for the sport if true,

but Andrew Gaze get the gig before - and Lindsay just recently came out and just told Nat Cook off for her comments about a female being needed to be chosen or she would boycott the opening,

- and Andrew was a very popular bloke amongst all the OZ Olympic athletes because of his very sincere "good guy" personality ( hey he took the bullet for the team by always having Heal as his room mate ) -

- - and LJ is well known to sometimes be an extremely cranky person behind the scenes.

still - it would be good.

Beyond her obvious athletic talents and dedication to the sport, she seems
Like an intelligent young woman. As a 3 time WNBA MVP and 2 time WNBA champion her achievements are amazing but unfortunately go largely unnoticed outside the basketball in Australia.i think it would be great to have LJ be the flag bearer for australia.

She even flies economy to be with her teammates instead taking up her business class entitlement.

Watched the news conference on Foxtel - Lauren very humble and pleased to be carrying the flag. A brilliant selection for flag bearer and thoroughly deserved. Suggested that Lauren carrying the flag will change the Opals luck and this time they will get the Gold.

LJ is confirmed. Very humbled and honoured.
Well done to her, well deserving.

Finally in biased terms, I'm glad it's a basketballer doing the honours.

Basketball has 3 flag bearers at the games...

China have continued their tradition of having hoopsters serve as a flag bearer by choosing Yi Jianlian while Pau Gasol will do so for Spain and Lauren Jackson for Australia

Despite Natalie Cook's controversial comments about a women being granted the role, a more perfect choice could not be made. Lauren Jackson ticks all the boxes that make her the ideal recipient of such an honour. If Nick Green felt any pressure at all about having to choose a woman, Lauren was a perfect choice despite her gender, its just incidental that she happens to be a woman as well.
